Hoxton, London

About us:

LAPD is an award-winning, independent and free-thinking lighting design consultancy, with an extensive portfolio spanning multiple disciplines. We create unique lighting design solutions and provide innovative product design for an international clientele.

Our business has been operational for 23 years. We are currently expanding to meet increased project demands in new locations and disciplines. We are at an exciting moment in our history, and we need a growing team with fresh ideas to grow with us.

We are based in Hoxton, which is easily accessible and an exciting place to work amongst other creative professionals. Our office is bright and light with good coffee, diverse places to eat, and spaces where we can test light fittings and hold meetings on-line or in person.

About you:

We are interested in candidates who are creative, innovative and able to work collaboratively. Experience in lighting design is preferred but not essential. In our experience lighting designers start their careers from a variety of creative backgrounds, so we are keen to hear your reason for wanting to work with us as a lighting designer and understand how you would fit within our team.

Experience in the use of lighting design software is an essential part of the role, we use Dialux and we would require you to be able to use this software from the start of your employment. The use of Sketch-up, AutoCAD, Revit and other 3D design packages are all part of our design process. Whilst we do not expect you to be proficient in all of these programmes, your ability to work creatively between software types will enable you to work technically and creatively as part of the LAPD design team.

We also use the Adobe Creative Suite. Experience in the use of Photoshop and Indesign is required to allow clear and effective communication.

Your skills:

  • Degree or educational background in Architecture/ Architectural Engineering/ Design / Engineering or related field.
  • Experience of working for a lighting consultancy or with a manufacturer would be beneficial.
  • Proficiency in English with good verbal, interpersonal and writing skills. Any other language skills are a bonus and add to our potential for global communication.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Organisational and time management skills.
  • Creativity, enthusiasm and technical awareness of architecture, engineering, light and lighting.

The role:

The projects we work on are global and varied in scale and type. As a new designer you will work in a support role for the senior design team. At times this will require you to meet with clients and project design teams. On occasions you will attend meetings face-to-face and go to site with a senior designer. We will always try to engage you in the hands-on experience of lighting design and in doing so we will expose you to different types of project experiences as they occur.

In your role you will work with all of the senior members of the team at different moments on different projects, this will help to give you a full understanding of the projects we work upon and an opportunity for us to understand where you excel.

Our design team work flexibly from the office and from home. We are happy for you to work from home for up-to 2 days of your working week. We believe it is particularly important at the start of your career to spend time working alongside others so that you can gain awareness and knowledge that may otherwise be difficult to communicate.

Your application:

All applications must include a covering email or letter, CV and examples of work demonstrating your thinking, your visual communication skills and your passion for light. Please include an indication of your salary expectations and notice period in your cover letter.

We aim to hold interviews in July for a start in September / early autumn.
