Cheryl Wing-Zi Wong: Current

9th August 2021

Composed of 12 illuminated steel arches, Current is a dynamic sculpture that celebrates transformation on New York’s Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Referencing the ebb and flow of river currents, currents of light, and currents of time, the sculpture, designed by Cheryl Wing-Zi Wong for the New York State Thruway Authority and ArtsWestchester, is under continual transformation. By day, the sculpture’s moving shadows and refractions of sunlight passing through the glass fins are ever-changing. In the evening, Current creates a shared spatial experience through the light animations, designed in collaboration with Arup, that respond to movements of passers-by.
