The Lighting Practice welcomes Democratic National Convention to Philadelphia

26th July 2016

(USA) – In collaboration with Starlite Productions, The Lighting Practice illuminates Philadelphia’s Amtrak 30th Street Station and City Hall in patriotic red, white and blue.

The 2016 Democratic National Convention will be in Philadelphia on 25-28 July. The Lighting Practice, in collaboration with Starlite Productions, has designed animated lighting installations for two of Philadelphia’s most visited locations: Amtrak 30th Street Station and Philadelphia City Hall. The buildings will display their red, white and blue patriotic makeovers when the conventioneers start arriving.

30TH STREET STATION
The Lighting Practice with Amtrak and University City District developed a dynamic lighting installation that will capture the excitement of the DNC and create a playful interpretation of 30th Street Station’s neoclassical structure. The programmable system of colour-changing LED fixtures and automated theatrical luminaires will sweep stars and colours across the station’s east portico and glass bridges. Inside, the solemn angel statue will be enhanced with a wash of blue light.

PHILADELPHIA’S CITY HALL & AVENUE OF THE ARTS
The Lighting Practice along with Center City District developed a dynamic colour-changing lighting installation for Philadelphia’s City Hall and Avenue of the Arts. The South facade of City Hall’s tower will be lit by colour-changing LEDs and theatrical gobos. City Hall’s patriotic lighting will be synchronised with the permanent colour-changing façade lighting along five blocks of the Avenue of the Arts. South Broad Street will proudly glow in red, white, and blue.

“The Center City District is pleased to use the occasion of the Democratic National Convention to extend the South Broad Street lighting and enabled us to engage The Lighting Practice to create this special patriotic attraction for the DNC delegates and all of those who visit, work, and live in Philadelphia,” said Paul R. Levy, President and CEO of the Center City District. “City Hall is a National Historic Landmark and features more than 250 sculptures and will join the historic buildings on the Avenue of the Arts in a unique, colourful showcase in Philadelphia’s downtown.”

The Lighting Practice is coordinating the execution of both 30th Street Station and City Hall with Starlite Productions. Starlite Productions is providing the lighting equipment as well as technical support.

Filbert Street Corridor flanked by the Reading Terminal Market and the Pennsylvania Convention Center, is also featuring a light show for the DNC. The corridor’s new colour-changing LED system, designed by The Lighting Practice, will light the underpass between 11th and 12th Street in red, white, and blue. Center City’s Filbert Street Corridor will provide another patriotic focal point for conference attendees and visitors to enjoy during their time in Philadelphia.
