City of Aalborg wins first prize in 2016 City.People.Light award
(South Korea) - Fourteenth edition of City.People.Light award by Philips Lighting and LUCI honours urban lighting projects that transform cities, increase safety and boost economic development.
The city of Aalborg, Denmark was awarded the first prize of the fourteenth annual City.People.Light award for its innovative ‘House of Music Area’ urban regeneration project. ÅF lighting, the company that designed and executed the project, was also awarded during the ceremony on 4 November 2016 in Seoul, South Korea.
The ‘House of Music Area’ is part of a larger renovation project that was geared towards transforming the Aalborg waterfront from an industrialised zone into a vibrant university city and buzzing cultural hub. The design embraced the local heritage of the site and used stakeholder analysis to ensure the space was not only attractive, but also inviting to local residents, students, and visitors to the city.
“In the new space, lighting intertwines with the natural backdrop of the waterfront creating a unique landscape throughout the day and even at night. The space is adaptive and dynamic ensuring the perfect environment is created no matter the event, exhibition or season. This is achieved through tailored lighting solutions,” said C.F. Møller, the project’s landscape architect.
The international City.People.Light award was created by Philips Lighting and LUCI, the international network of cities on urban lighting, in 2003. Over the years, it has honoured multiple cities for their sustainable urban development projects that utilise light to enhance the environment and lives of local citizens. “Lighting is a crucial part of city planning and their appeal. For the fourteenth consecutive year of this award, we received over 30 entries and have seen increasing interest from designers and cities in urban beautification and the importance given to urban lighting as part of their innovative city concepts,” said Kim Moonsung, Country Leader at Philips Lighting in Korea.
“The City.People.Light award participates in making cities within LUCI and beyond, progress towards a better use of light, leading to a better quality of life for their citizens,” said LUCI President Mary-Ann Schreurs, Vice-Mayor of Innovation and Design, Culture and Sustainability at the City of Eindhoven.
Runners up for the award included projects from Seoul (South-Korea) and Emmen (Netherlands).
Second Prize - Gyeongui Line Forest Walkway Lighting Design Project, Seoul, Korea
Since the railway switched to being underground in 2005, the area had been neglected leading to high crime rates and pollution levels. The Gyeongui Line Forest Walkway Lighting Design Project revitalised this area by utilising light to create a natural and comfortable space for local residents. The lighting was designed to minimise light pollution at night for local residents while creating a safe walkway for passersby throughout the day. The space has now been reborn as a popular city location with local resident satisfaction exceeding 80%.
Third Prize - Emmen City Center Renovation Project, Emmen, Netherlands
The Emmen City Center Renovation Project began in 2003 with a purpose to boost economic development, generate employment and strengthen the international position of Emmen. Since the project began, lighting has been embedded in attractions across the city emphasising major landmarks such as the Marktplein (Market Square) and the Raadhuisplein (Town Hall Square). As part of the project, the Hondsrugweg, one of the busiest traffic routes in Emmen, was redeveloped with art instillations interweaved with functional lighting to create a unique roadway for local commuters.

Second LED installation surpasses 100,000 hours use at Pulsar HQ
(UK) - Second Pulsar factory installation showcases longevity of LEDs with over 115,000 hours activity.
Back in May 2003 Pulsar installed its own LED lighting on the front of the building, confident in its reliability, longevity, and durability. Twelve Chroma Panels were installed on the South-facing front of the factory building and have been running 24/7 ever since.
Fast forward to today and the original ChromaPanels printed with the Pulsar name have clocked an impressive thirteen years ten months of continuous activity - actually surpassing 115,000 hours! This real-world industry first is proof of LED’s amazing longevity and also of Pulsar’s dedication to making quality LED lighting fixtures.
In the May of 2005, an additional 21 metres of ChromaStrip2 product were installed on Pulsar’s facade. Pulsar's ChromaStrip2 product has now also surpassed 100,000 hours! So now Pulsar boasts the world’s second longest lasting LED installation.
Company records place the date of installation and commissioning to a day in May of 2004, when the company hired a cherry picker to install the ChromaStrip2’s on the front of the factory. This date confirmed by a recent serial number check.
Yet again, another major milestone for Pulsar, having two installations surpassing 100,000 hours continuous use. As far as Pulsar are aware there are no other similar examples, particularly when many installations would have been stripped out and re-fitted many times over the years.
Dave Cowan, Pulsar sales team said: “As the member of the Pulsar family responsible for generating, supporting and selling our Architectural Lighting Products globally along with a superb and talented team, it’s great to see our products survive the test of time and prove we can stand by our claims of durability, longevity and reliability. The installation here is mirrored by a real customer installation in Bahrain where the Financial Harbour is lit by the same product and still going strong. Let’s see where the next thirteen years will take us!”
Andrew Hilbert, Operations Director stated: “Whilst the ‘headline’ is the longevity of the LED’s, it is the driver components that keep those LED’s operating. Each CS2 has 30 LED’s and more than 40 driver components which have also operated for 100,000 hours. A luminaire is only as reliable as it’s least reliable component, so Pulsar has always taken a systemic approach to product design. Products can fail due to water ingress, stresses due to thermal cycling, or premature failure of just one passive component in a driver. The reputation for longevity, durability and reliability has only been achieved through a rigorous design process and 15 years of experience producing LED luminaires.”

Michael Curry – Senior Associate, Oxfordshire Studio
Curry has worked in lighting design for 20 years and joined dpa lighting consultants as a Senior Designer in 1999.
He has worked on many prestigious projects worldwide and has been an integral part of the practice’s growth and development over the past two decades. He leads one of three design teams within the Oxfordshire Office. Curry commented: “In my role, I contribute to the varied and exciting projects within the team, leading the design from conception through to a very hands on approach to design through lighting trials, specification and detailed development of the schemes”.
Hotel lighting design forms a large part of the practices’ portfolio and Curry has been instrumental in developing the team’s creative thinking by encouraging them to be brave, and use less light and appropriately so that the drama and theatre of the interior space is enhanced, whilst maintaining a balance of functionality.
Curry’s project experience is broad, as he commented: “I think we are fortunate as lighting designers to contribute to an exciting mix of project types from small scale individual spaces such as a residential commission through to large scale public realm environments changing a city’s direction. Regardless of the scale a passion to stretch our design thinking is important leaving a legacy of our design contribution for decades to come.” The diversity of project work fuels Michael’s enthusiasm for the subject, capturing exciting projects at different human scales and needs.
Ian Clarke – Associate, Oxfordshire Studio
Clarke has worked in the lighting industry for 20 years initially within product design and moving into consultancy withdpa lighting consultants over eleven years ago.
Clarke enjoys the creative process involved when pushing for great lighting solutions within each project. He believes being a lighting designer provides the opportunity to direct what is revealed or concealed during the hours of darkness and it is this visual and spacial control that he finds very exciting. Embracing the challenge as an artistic and creative opportunity is how superb results can be achieved.
Within dpa it is the great variety of project types, people and approaches to lighting which Clarke really enjoys. Hard work, attention to detail, a willing team and a common goal to produce excellent work are the elements Clarke believes make the difference.
Rachael Nicholls – Senior Designer, Oxfordshire Studio
Nicholls has recently joined dpa as a Senior Designer, following her return to the UK, having spent the last 2 years living and working in Sydney, Australia where she worked on a wide range of projects including private residential developments, transport and public masterplans.
