WEDNESDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER

Ambient Communication
Tapio Rosenius, Skandal Technologies
12:00 – 18:00 (3 x 2 hour sessions)
Experience the future of digital content creation for media facades and architectural environments – straight outta Finland! With Ambient Communication, a new hybrid form of space is created, that is simultaneously digital and physical yet rooted to human biology. Skandal Technologies will bring their EC funded research findings for sharing, together with their beta level special software and sensor rig to play with.

Everything you wanted to know about LEDs* (*but were afraid to ask)
Jeremy Fielding, Atrium
12:00 - 13:00
If darc room was set in an American High School we’d call this LED 101 – using hands-on demonstrations and simple, easy to understand explanations join Jeremy Fielding on a journey through the basic concepts of colour rendering, colour temperature, flicker, dimming, consistency, spectral power distributions, control and much more – all the hot topics with live demonstrations of key elements.

Human Centric Lighting
Panel discussion featuring Dr. Karolina M. Zielinska-Dabkowska RIBA, IALD, IES, MSLL; Mark Ridler (Director of Lighting at BDP); Rebecca Weir (Creative Director at Light IQ); Stephen Lisk (Lighting Designer and President of CIBSE) and Iain Carlile (Lighting Designer and President of the SLL)
13:30 - 15:30
Human Centric Lighting was the key buzz phrase at this year’s Light + Building – almost everyone was claiming some form of Human Centric element in their product range – but what exactly do we mean by Human Centric Lighting? Is it the ability to change colour temperature and intensity, is it a more sophisticated mapping of light over time or is it mainly a marketing bandwagon that everyone is jumping on. The biological effect of light cannot be denied and therefore the responsible use of light needs to become the cornerstone of our industry.

Control
David Kriebel, LensVector
16:00 - 17:00
Control is always at the top of the list when you ask lighting designers what they want to know more about, but now sophisticated lighting control is available to everyone one from tech-savvy designers to anyone with a smart device. darc room brings you a hands-on workshop where you can get to experience the latest Casambi Bluetooth based lighting control technology applied to LensVector dynamic beam shaping, output control and colour temperature. In this workshop, you will get to see the hardware that normally sits behind the scenes, learn how to use a simple iPhone or Android app to create group, set static scenes, and create animated scenes.

ISE to move to Barcelona in 2021

(Netherlands) - Integrated Systems Events, the producers of the Integrated Systems Europe exhibition, has announced that its 2021 edition will be held at Gran Via, part of the Fira de Barcelona exhibition complex in Spain on 2-5 February.

The new venue will become the permanent location for the world’s largest AV and systems integration show.

The decision to relocate the ISE exhibition comes after 18 months of research into the viability of remaining at the RAI Amsterdam. With annual growth in ISE exhibitors and attendees approaching 10%, and the international AV market forecast to grow by 5% per annum through to 2021, it was concluded that ISE was outgrowing its popular Amsterdam location.

ISE 2018 attracted 80,923 attendees, of which 22,000 were visiting the show for the first time while 1,296 exhibitors filled 53,000 net sqm of floor space in 15 halls. ISE 2019 is expected to increase on these record-breaking figures.

Mike Blackman, Managing Director Integrated Systems Events, commented: “The RAI and Amsterdam have provided a fantastic location, been great partners and contributed to the success of the show. But, demand from exhibitors and the continued increase in the numbers of attendees showed us that limited floor space was in danger of putting a brake on the show’s development. In spite of all our best efforts, this was not an issue we felt could be solved by staying at the RAI Amsterdam.

“We conducted extensive exhibitor and attendee research and visited many major exhibition centres in Europe before making this important decision. By announcing our move to one of Europe’s largest and most prestigious convention complexes, we can now continue to focus on creating a unique experience for everyone and confidently plan for long-term development. At the same time, we will ensure that the remaining two editions of ISE at the RAI Amsterdam are the best in its illustrious history and a fitting way to bring our 14-year relationship with the venue and city to a close.”

The Fira de Barcelona is one of Europe’s most prestigious convention and conference locations. The complex has two exhibition venues and hosts 140 international trade shows each year, featuring over 30,000 exhibitors and attracting over two million attendees. In total it has over 400,000 sqm of floor space and 14 halls.

Gran Via is one of Europe’s largest and most modern exhibition venues. It blends outstanding architecture with exceptional functionality across 8 halls and 200,000 sqm of exhibition floor space. It also offers unparalleled visitor flow and state-of-the-art services and logistics. It is conveniently placed for access to the nearby international airport and public transport.

ISE’s co-owners AVIXA and CEDIA are keen to highlight the positive benefits of the decision to relocate.

David Labuskes, AVIXA CEO, commented: “Our thinking in coming to this decision has been driven by our desire to serve and deliver value for our members, attendees and exhibitors at ISE. We can better achieve these objectives in a venue that can evolve with us and continue to reflect the market we work in.  The continued success of ISE and the growth anticipated in the AV business meant that we knew this decision would need to be taken before too long. I’m delighted that we were able to make that decision now so as to control events and to ensure that a smooth transition is possible.”

Tabatha O’Connor, CEDIA Global President and CEO, commented: “Not only is the new venue a state of the art home for our show but the city of Barcelona is one of Europe’s most vibrant and exciting. It’s the perfect choice for an exhibition and growing industry that engenders creativity and commerce.”

Fira is one of Europe’s leading trade fair organisations and is closely linked to the Barcelona brand, a city with over a century of trade fair tradition. Its annual economic contribution to the city of Barcelona and its surroundings is estimated at over €2,600 million. Fira is a consortium comprising the Barcelona City Council, the Catalan Generalitat and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, which combines public ownership with autonomous company management.

Both, the ISE 2019 and 2020 editions will take place at the RAI Amsterdam and are forecast to be the largest and most successful in the show’s 16-year history.

Further information on the move to Barcelona for exhibitors and attendees will be available from a live webcast, hosted on the ISE website (www.iseurope.org) at 13:00 CET on Thursday 19th July.

Inter-lux to acquire Whitegoods as Linea Light invests

(USA) - US supplier to acquire all assets and IP for the integrated lighting brand from Whitegoods LLC, opening UK production facility and London design studio as Linea Light Group invests in Inter-lux.

Inter-lux is to acquire the Whitegoods brand from Whitegoods LLC whilst receiving investment from Italian-based Linea Light Group. Inter-lux has integrated design, engineering and manufacturing, as well as all sales and support services in their facility in Baltimore, Maryland.

Inter-lux manufactures and distributes quality lighting brands including Sattler, Linealight, Filix and Mike Stoane Lighting in North America through an established network of well-supported independent sales representatives.

The fortified relationship between Inter-lux and Linea Light Group will enable Inter-lux to accelerate the introduction and sales of its Partner Brand offerings.

DeVries says, “After a little over three years working with Linea Light, we have found that their goals are very well matched to ours. We will continue to grow market share with our existing Partner Brands by accelerating the introduction of new products and services from each of them, as well as expanding our sales and marketing activities to better service our network of professional sales organizations.”

Linea Light Group manufactures a wide range of commercial, residential and industrial lighting products from its multiple factories in northern Italy. “Our goal is to bring our products and services to the North American market. Over the last three years, we have been impressed with the performance of Inter-lux, and we are totally in support of the continuation of the Inter-lux hybrid model of the manufacturing and distribution of its partner brands.” contributes Nicola Vendrame, CEO Linea Light Group.

“As a result of this transaction, no changes in company leadership nor focus is anticipated apart from the changes that occur due to the growth of the company,” DeVries adds. “We will stay a focused, market-driven company dedicated to supporting our sales representatives and their customers.”

Whitegoods was founded in 2001 in order to address the need for minimalist, integrated lighting products that are easy to specify, install and maintain. All operations in the UK were shut down in December 2015, when the rights to the brand were purchased by Whitegoods LLC, a Maryland corporation.

Inter-lux has distributed and eventually manufactured the Whitegoods product line under license for ten years. During that time, the brand has steadily expanded and gained market share in North America.

In 2016, Inter-lux began exporting Whitegoods product internationally to meet the demands of both domestic and international design firms commissioning projects in the UK, Italy, Dubai, China, France and other countries.

Along with the purchase, the company has opened a design office in London led by Inter-lux Design Director and original Founder of Whitegoods, Douglas James and a production facility in Dorset, UK managed by Hamid Beheshti. The design studio will focus on product and promotional development while the Dorset facility will produce the Whitegoods brand for the UK and other international markets.

“Whitegoods was developed to address the need for simple and effective integrated lighting tools for the world’s most discerning specifiers.” states James, “The Design Studio allows us to continue to innovate the market through the refinement and expansion of the Whitegoods product line.”

CEO Mark DeVries states, “We are very excited to have reunited with a team of Whitegoods designers that includes Douglas James, the author of the Whitegoods language of light, as well as Thanh Tran and Andreas Anastasi, who are experienced Whitegoods designers. We are equally positive about the fact that they are located in London, the home of the brand.”

The production facility is already producing a limited range of the product line and will be expanding to produce all products within eighteen months.

“I am proud to be part of the new team spearheading the continued expansion of the Whitegoods product line. Whitegoods is a brand I strongly believe in and support.” states Beheshti, the former head of manufacturing for Whitegoods UK.

CEO Mark DeVries says, “The Whitegoods range has been in limited supply, outside of the US, for the past two years, so we are now very happy to be in a dedicated UK facility, producing in the market, to better service our UK and international customers.”

Whitegoods customers will be further supported by Chris Burridge, Director of Sales. Burridge has been Sales Director for Whitegoods for the past three years and has a long history of success in the lighting industry, with a great deal of expertise and experience with the range.

Burridge says, “The Whitegoods brand has a broad range of capabilities and I look forward to assisting our customers in helping them achieve spectacular design results.”

CEO Mark DeVries states, “The acquisition of the Whitegoods brand was a natural next step for Inter-lux. The ability to retain the design team led by Douglas will insure the integrity of the brand as we accelerate new products into the marketplace as Whitegoods re-establishes itself internationally. All new product, commencing with some very exciting introductions this year, will be designed on an international platform, which allows our customers to specify a product that will be certified for any world market, and be functionally and aesthetically the same.”

Quistrebert brothers win World Masters of Projection Mapping

(Netherlands) - Paul James, editor-in-chief of arc magazine, was amongst the judges as Florian and Michael Quistrebert were announced as the winners of the first edition of the World Masters of Projection Mapping at the Awards Ceremony at Integrated Systems Europe 2018.

World Masters of Projection Mapping is a joint venture initiative from Amsterdam Light Festival, Integrated Systems Europe and RAI Amsterdam.

The announcement came after a three-week period, during which some of the world’s leading video artists projected their artworks onto Amsterdam’s multifaceted EYE Filmmuseum.

The specific award for the Quistrebert brothers’ Stripes 5 recognises The Best Use of Location and Technology.

In total, five artists were chosen to show their artworks on the building. The challenge for them was both creative and technical. The other participating finalists were: Geert Mul (NL), Databased dialogues for algorithmic landscapes; TelcoSystems & Spatial Media Laboratories (NL), TESTFILM #4; Alida Dors & Manuel Rodrigues (NL), Close Up; and Eder Santos (BR), Call Waiting.

The selection of the finalists was carried out through close collaboration between EYE Filmmuseum and Amsterdam Light Festival. The International Jury who judged the finalists on 8 February comprised: Lennart Booij - Artistic Director of Amsterdam Light Festival (Jury Chair); Jaap Guldemond - Director of Exhibitions EYE Filmmuseum; Marente Bloemheuvel- Associate Curator of EYE Filmmuseum; Jozef Hey - Founder and Owner of BeamSystems; Giny Vos - Artist; Paul James - Editor-in-Chief, arc magazine; and Hartmut Kulessa - Panasonic Europe.

Lennart Booij commented on the winning entry: “The jury was very complimentary about the composition and the use of the building in this display, including its underside. The artwork also answers the question presented by the challenges of projecting onto a large surface. Creatively, it is graphically very strong and reflects on art disciplines such as ‘op art’ (optical art) and early abstract cinema.”

The theme of the first edition, ‘Bridging the Gap’, encouraged the creation of connections, both physically in the city as well as between people and cultures. The theme also illustrates the combination of the three disciplines of art highlighted in this project: light art, video art, and cinematography.

Zumi and SFA42 Architects win Surface Design Awards lighting categories

(UK) - Zumi wins Light and Surface Interior award for Soundscapes and SFA42 Architects win Light and Surface Exterior award for Beach Hut Monument for Beachy Head Lady.

The Light and Surface Interior Award winner Zumi for Soundscapes in Axel Vervoordt’s Kanaal complex in Antwerp was recognised for "the integration of light texture and acoustic performance in one product and the proportion and materiality was successful", as said by judge Jenny Jones. The project combined energy-efficient LED lighting with a high-quality acoustic panel and the option to integrate speakers.

“In close collaboration with Alex Gaspar, the owner of Autodialog, we were able to achieve a unique and innovative lighting concept,” says Stephan Mees of Zumi. ‘For a large meeting room with a lot of hard materials and a steel ceiling, initial speculations involved a false ceiling. However, we designed an acoustic panel which also encompasses lighting. In this way, the space remained as close as possible to its original appearance.

“Our Soundscapes are a modular system of vertically and horizontally suspended panels and integrated light profiles. These panels are not only effective when it comes to acoustic absorption, they also represent a masterpiece of lighting technology.”

Zumi uses PI-LED technology in its products, an innovation that makes it possible for light to be harmonised to the greatest extent possible with what users and visitors need.

Zumi’s Tony Decavele comments, “Our products are made with a considerable focus on human-centric light, so the way in which light has an effect on people. On the one hand, using PI-LED you can match the intensity of the light to the time of day, while on the other you can synchronise colour temperature with the kind of ambience a space requires. This can be, for instance, a dinner at candlelight or a trendy lounge.’

The Eastbourne Pavilion is the result of a design build competition in which the local council asked designers to create iconic beach huts by the Seafront Walk. The winner of the Light and Surface Exterior category was the Beach Hut Monument for Beachy Head Lady by SFA42 Architects. The monument is made of translucent Corian Panels with an engraving on the street side of the hut explaining the story behind the design. The result was described by Ab Rogers as "Joyful multifaceted illuminated hut, (with a strong dialogue).

The Surface Design Awards took place on the 8 February as part of Surface Design Show 2018. The Surface Design Show is the only event in the UK focusing solely on interior and exterior surface design, facilitating thousands of innovative and thrilling materials to connect with an audience of architects and designers.

Launched in 2013, Surface Design Awards has grown exponentially in both stature and quality. International growth has been staggering this year with project entries from 16 different countries. 51% of the projects were outside the UK. 13 from China, 7 from Portugal and further entries from Spain, Italy, India, Egypt, Canada, America, Belgium, Lithuania, Taiwan and Hungary. There were 39 entries from the UK, 69% of these being from London. The most popular categories entered were Commercial Interiors and Housing Interiors.

The judging panel of the eleven Award categories was co-chaired by Tina Norden, of Conran and Partners, and Ab Rogers of Ab Rogers Design. The judges included Jenny Jones of Studio Jenny Jones, Sacha Leong of Studioilse, Constantina Tsoutsikou of HBA London, Jo Littlefair of Goddard Littlefair, Howard Sullivan of YourStudio and Nir Gilad of Nous Design, all of whom are experts in their fields.
