Prolicht joins forces with Tom Dixon
(Austria) – The companies have collaborated on new LED
track system, Code.
Prolicht has announced a new collaboration with decorative
lighting designer Tom Dixon that will see the brands “join forces on a global
scale, starting with a common approach to lighting project business worldwide”.
A joint statement reads: “The goal is clear – we are
complementing each other by merging the unique design vision of Tom Dixon with
the technical lighting knowledge of Prolicht.”
The relationship between Prolicht and Tom Dixon started
informally a few years ago, as the two brands were often working independently
on the same projects. After some success, Prolicht started to become the
preferred choice for architectural lighting in Tom Dixon’s interior projects,
while Tom Dixon became the first choice for Prolicht when a decorative touch
was needed. As the two teams began working more and more together, a clear
affinity in vision and philosophy emerged, creating a symbiosis between
technology and design.
Walter Norz, Founder and CEO of Prolicht, first met with Tom
Dixon in 2019. It was here that discussions first arose about joining forces.
Six months later the collaboration has resulted in the launch of Code, an LED
track system that combines Prolicht’s expertise in technical lighting
engineering with the discernible Tom Dixon design and aesthetic.
“It was amazing how quickly the connection with Tom and his
team started,” said Norz. “From our very first meeting the sparkle of creativity
was there, and we all immediately felt an alluring urge of starting something
together. Our first joint result, the Code, represents the epitome of our
collaboration: something neither of us could have done without the other, the
perfect result of our two different backgrounds and complementary capabilities
merging.”
Code utilises bare LEDs on circuit boards that can be used
to create thin strips, delicate chains and continuous columns of light. Comprised
of three LED light soures – Dot, Dash and Grid – the elementary shapes of
round, square and line for the basis of a kit-of-parts, which allows infinite
possibilities to design graphic lighting sculptures.
“For the past year we’ve been obsessed with printed circuit
boards (PCBs),” added Tom Dixon. “Our collaboration with Prolicht started high
in the mountains of Innsbruck, where we shared our first thoughts on a minimal
track system that would attempt to remove the superfluous and reveal the light
engine in all its naked glory.”

LEDucation cancels for 2020
(USA) - The show, initially postponed from March until August, will next take place in 2021.
The Designers Lighting Forum of New York (DLFNY) and the LEDucation committee has announced that the LEDucation 2020 Trade Show and Conference, previously scheduled for August 18-19 2020, will not take place, due to the ongoing impacts of Covid-19.
The event was initially due to take place on 17-18 March, but was postponed until August earlier this year, as the Covid-19 pandemic began to take hold. The next edition of the event will now take place on March 16-17 at the New York Hilton Midtown, pending improved conditions.
"Due to the continuing impacts surrounding Covid-19, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel LEDucation 2020," said LEDucation Co-Chairs Burt Grant and Caroline Rinker. "We are disappointed that we are unable to hold LEDucation 2020 for the lighting community. However, the health and welfare of our exhibitors and attendees is our top priority, and we feel that this is the right decision based on the information we have today.
"Our thoughts remain with those who have been directly affected by the virus, and to all those who are struggling with the ramifications of this health crisis."
Francesca Bastianini, President of the DLFNY, added: "We are faced with an unprecedented level of uncertainty for what will occur in the coming months, and this decision will allow us to come together again when there is more clarity regarding our collective health.
"We look forward to when we can join with you all again in person to share in the news and innovation from the industry, its practitioners, and our community."
Certified Lighting Designer: Introduction to the CLD Certification
Given the current situation with the Covid-19 and many of us working remotely, this may be an ideal time to invest in yourself and your future. Getting your Certified Lighting Designer (CLD) certification is a vitally important step forward for you as professional lighting designer. Here, Peter Raynham, Educator IALD, CLD Commissioner, provides an inside look at the CLD and how to get started.
MS Lighting Design: Fifty Shades of White
For his second webinar, Marcus Steffen, founder of MS Lighting Design, offers an introduction to colour temperature and colour rendering. One of the most important factors for lighting design to consider when specifying sources for a project, here Steffen shares what he considers the key basics when it comes to colour temperature and rendering.
L&L Luce&Light - Intono
In this beautiful short film, L&L Luce&Light showcases the capabilities of its new wall-mounted fixture for outdoor applications, Intono, through an artistic performance by Lucio Schiavon.
Alongside its elegant design, Intono features three innovative characteristics: the ability to blend in and to play music, together with smart-speaker compatibility.
Lighting Design Collective: Data Is Beautiful - Tieto HQ
Lighting Design Collective (LDC) used light as a live data visualisation at the headquarters for Finnish IT software and service company Tieto in Espoo, Finland.
The goal of the project was to find a way to immerse visitors and employees into Tieto's primary product: data. The lighting was designed to express the company's future-oriented narrative of capturing the opportunities of the data-driven world, and turning them into lifelong value for people, business and society. The lighting concept sought to provide high quality environments with unique light features as the focal points and narrative elements. The intervention therefore created experimental cyber-physical spaces where the key areas, such as the atrium and conference centre, merged the digital realm and the built environment.
This short film demonstrates how LDC was able to such a striking, unique lighting feature.
The Lighting Practice: What is Correlated Colour Temperature?
The Lighting Practice's Lillian Knoerzer demystifies correlated colour temperature (CCT) explaining when it is appropriate to use warm and/or cool colour temperatures. Knoerzer also shares some of the factors The Lighting Practice considers when recommending CCTs for its projects, such as culture, climate, market sector, and even materials and finishes used in the space.

IALD Business Owners Webinar: Are we remotely productive?
Whether you are a single practitioner or an employee of a larger firm, we are all working in a new environment. While the current climate may be temporary, we have an opportunity to evaluate some of the work habits we have taken for granted when physical presence was possible. Rather than looking at a rhetorical question of “a glass half empty versus half full”, maybe we can shift our thinking to “the glass is refillable”.
Steven Rosen, FIALD, Principal of Available Light with offices in Boston, NY and Raleigh, NC, and Dawn Hollingsworth, FIALD, CLD, Principal of Darkhorse Lightworks, explore ideas on remote productivity and maintaining creativity among the chaos.
Spread the Light: Light and the City - Riccardo Marini & Rayane Belkadi
In part 2 of STIR's Spread the Light series, filmed by Linus Lopez at PLDC 2019, architect Riccardo Marini and emerging interior and lighting designer Rayane Belkadi talk about the ways in which light - both natural and artificial - is used in the built environment, and how different cultures utilise light in different ways.
The Spread the Light series is presented by Wipro Lighting in collaboration with PLDC.

MS Lighting Design: Responsible Lighting in a Climate Change World
Marcus Steffen, Founder of MS Lighting Design, hosts a webinar examining the ways in which lighting design impacts climate change. Throughout the webinar, Steffen questions how the lighting industry can adapt to a new world with Carbon Net Zero by 2050, and the role the circular economy will play in this.
