Light.Func appoints new Associate
(UAE) - Light.Func appoints new associate Abeer Nowailaty to head up strategic operations based in Jeddah.
In anticipated growth for Saudi Arabia’s plans towards Vision 2030, Light.Func welcomes Nowailaty to the team, to be based in Jeddah.
Nowailaty brings over ten years’ experience in lighting design, with a passion for architectural lighting. Nowailaty has extensive experience in lighting solutions for historical buildings within Saudi Arabia and holds both a B.Sc Architecture and MFA from Parsons Creative School, NYC. Her role for Light.Func will be pivotal to regional growth and developing existing relationships with consultancies within the Kingdom.
“We see this as a strategic move, and is in line with the consensus that Light.Func brings as a strong local brand. Light.Func is a lighting design studio that is driven by excellence in lighting everywhere we work, so having the right people is as crucial as the projects we work on,” said Sakina Dugawalla-Moeller, Founder and Design Director of Light.Func.
The new hire represents an increased investment into partnerships with firms within the region, with a specific focus on the growth in Saudi Arabia. The construction industry is a major contributor to Saudi Arabia’s economy and accounts for more than 6% of the country’s gross domestic product.
The Vision 2030 aims to diversify and strengthen the economy, with analysts predicting the construction sector to grow at 6% CAGR over the next five years (dependent on any growth headwinds due to COVID-19 outbreak).
“I’m excited to represent an independent studio who are invested in the Middle East, and care about the region both from an aesthetic, environmental, socio-political and cultural perspectives. To reintroduce lighting not only as a fixture, but as an essence that can create the very notion of an architectural space; or even a sense of place that can spill out onto the public realm,” said Nowailaty.

Luminale Festival unveils #LuminaleDigital
(Germany) – Luminale Festival was scheduled to take place during Light+Building this March
Due to the Covid-19 virus, Luminale 2020, initially due to
take place during Light+Building this March, had to be cancelled shortly before
opening.
However, the festival organisers have since unveiled
#LuminaleDigital – an online platform where visitors can go on a virtual tour
of this year’s installations.
“Over the last 18 months, Luminale 2020 was planned with
passion and dedication, actively supported by numerous stakeholders and eagerly
awaited by many visitors,” reads a statement from festival organisers. “All
festival productions were completed as planned for the opening day of the event,
when the festival had to be cancelled at very short notice due to the current
situation.
“Even though the Luminale was not able to light up the cities
of Frankfurt and Offenbach this year, the light festival is now offering a
virtual view of countless light-art works and installations under the hashtag
#luminaledigital.”
The installations are available to view on the Luminale
website.
Helvar HQ awarded Gold level WELL Certification
(Finland) – Helvar HQ becomes first project in Scandinavia to receive WELL Certification under WELL v2.
Helvar has been awarded the WELL Certification at Gold level
for its headquarters in Espoo, Finland by the International WELL Building Institute
(IWBI).
The distinction was awarded through IWBI’s WELL v2 pilot,
the latest version of the WELL Building Standard, and is the first project in
Finland and Scandinavia to receive WELL Certification under WELL v2.
The WELL Building Standard offers an excellent framework to
design a people-focused workplace. Helvar’s HQ was designed with such a
forward-thinking mindset that it was relatively easy to adapt the office in its
existing state to improve the conditions, in order to meet and achieve WELL
features.
Created through seven years of rigorous research and development,
working with leading physicians, scientists and industry professionals, the
WELL Building Standard is a performance-based certification system that marries
best practices in design and construction with evidence-based scientific
research. Helvar HQ earned the distinction based on 10 categories of building
performance – Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound,
Materials, Mind and Community.
“This is a proud moment and a great achievement for us all
at Helvar,” said Paula Ristoja, Head of Helvar’s Luminaire Manufacturer Channel.
“The Helvar WELL project team will be organising a number of WELL events at the
Helvar HQ, which include a tour of the office. We welcome you to join us in celebrating
our WELL Certification.”
WELL is grounded in a body of evidence-based research that
explores the connection between the buildings where we spend approximately 90
percent of our time, and the health and wellness impacts on the people inside
these buildings. To be awarded WELL Certification by IWBI, Helvar HQ underwent
rigorous testing and a final evaluation carried out by Green Business Certification
Inc. (GBCI) - the third-party certification body for WELL – to ensure that it
met all WELL Certified Gold performance requirements.
Amsterdam Light Festival at Amsterdam UMC
(Netherlands) - 'Today I Love You' light-art was installed at Amsterdam UMC by Amsterdam Light Festival.
Amsterdam Light Festival, in collaboration with Light Art Collection, has installed a light-art piece on the walls of Amsterdam UMC with the message 'Today I Love You'.
The artwork was created by Italian artists Massimo Uberti and Marco Pollice for the fourth edition of the festival in 2015-16, but has been re-introduced due to the message being more relevant than ever, now.
According the Amsterdam Light Festival, the artwork conveys: "A message with enlightening words for all people who work hard, day and night, to help others and for those who are themselves affected by the virus. These magical words are now more than ever, welcomed and invite passers-by to say them out loud every day.
"With the artwork, Amsterdam Light Festival would like to thank medical personnel all over the world for all their hard work. The message is also a reminder to everyone to take good care of themselves and those around them.
"Thanks to the artists and Light Art Collection, the work could be placed as a statement of support."
