Lighting design practice Illumination Arts (IA), best known for its work on bridges and infrastructure projects, has joined HLB Lighting Design. The acquisition enables both firms to offer expanded architectural lighting and daylighting design services to clients both across the USA and worldwide.
Faith Baum, Principal and Owner of Illumination Arts, said: “We’re thrilled to unite with such a forward-thinking design firm and to have our entire staff under the HLB brand. HLB has been a leader for many years, setting the bar for professionalism and economy of scale in the architectural lighting industry.
“We believe there is strength in numbers, and together, we are raising the bar for what our clients expect from professional lighting designers.”
The merger with HLB will make it easier for IA to service its client base, providing a strategic locality, while the ability to collaborate on a wide variety of projects from coast to coast, with local footing, makes the combination a stronger lighting partner.
HLB and IA complement each other not only in the quest for design excellence, but also with their values, specifically when it comes to diversity and the next generation of lighting designers. “A common culture is instrumental when bringing two firms together,” said Barbara Horton, President and CEO of HLB.
“IA is recognised internationally as an innovator in the design of iconic bridges and this elevates the depth and expertise of our infrastructure practice throughout our seven HLB offices around the country.”
Ken Douglas, Principal of Illumination Arts, added: “This is great news for our respective clients, it provides an expanded pool of experienced designers to bring their ideas and knowledge to bear on projects.
“At the same time, the geographic reach of the combined firms will facilitate expansion of existing client relationships and allow for more in-person interaction with clients spread out across the country.”

Artingstall launches Artin Light
(UK) – Artin Light is a new independent lighting design consultancy based in Manchester, UK.
Having worked in the lighting design industry for more than ten years, Luke Artingstall has now launched Artin Light, an independent lighting design consultancy based in Manchester, UK.
Throughout his career, Artingstall has worked on a number of high profile architectural schemes across a variety of design sectors. His experience ranges from master planning public realm schemes, historic architecture and conservation projects, commercial office design, hospitality and hotel design and light art installations.
Artingstall said: “Launching Artin Light as a design consultancy in Manchester has always been my ambition and target. Manchester is a growing city and has huge and exciting potential for the future. Manchester has grown in the international press, and is fast becoming one of the most exciting cities in the world to visit. As a designer who is passionate about lighting and our industry, I’m determined to promote and further the development of architectural lighting design in the North of England.
“London has been a key stronghold for lighting design practices and will always be, however I want to help Manchester raise the profile of lighting design on an international scale, and this is why I’m excited to launch Artin Light amongst the lighting community.”
Artingstall established Artin Light to be a lighting design consultancy that takes a collaborative approach to design, allowing for cross-pollination with other creative industries, creating unique environments, inspired by the digitally influenced and connected world that we live in.
He continued: “I want us to push our creative boundaries by unrestricting the design process and creating a dreamscape canvas for our designers and clients. I know the world we live in has its restrictions physically and commercially, however Its our job to push these boundaries to their limits, giving our clients something special, unique and personalised to their brand.
“Encouraging cross collaboration with other creative industries and individuals creates an excitement of unknowns, and opens the door to new possibilities of lighting design and the way we use it in architectural environments. This isn’t just about lighting design, its about entering new territories of technology inspired design, which affects us day to day, but also pushes the boundaries of artist expression in the lighting world.”
EucoLight commitment reconfirmed by 2018 Conference
(Netherlands) - 2018 Conference reconfirms EucoLight commitment to making the Circular Economy a reality for lighting.
EucoLight, the European association of collection and recycling organisations for WEEE lamps and lightings, held their third conference at Sassenheim, the Netherlands, which gathered 70 delegates from the community of producers’ responsibility organisations for lighting. Latest developments in collection and treatment of end-of-life lighting products were discussed, as the transition towards a circular economy in the sector gathers pace.
Delegates were presented with insights on market trends and expected evolution of lighting waste flows and on LED technology by industry experts.
There are a number of technical challengers for more circularity in the lighting business and the collection of used lighting products is subject to targets imposed by the legislation. However, collection rates can be improved through efficiency of operations, change in consumer behaviour and policy mechanisms, as was demonstrated during the conference.
LED lamps currently represent less than 2% of the waste stream, with their long life, the industry has time to prepare for this new type of waste. To this end, delegates learnt about the technical composition and options for future of LEDs and LED recycling techniques.
An important aspect for EucoLight members in achieving a circular economy in lighting, is ensuring a level playing field. Delegates strongly supported some of the new extended producer responsibility requirements in the EU waste package, and also called for more action against online freeriders. Nigel Harvey, CEO of Recolight and a director of EucoLight commented: “We are pleased to be working with EucoLight to address non-compliance associated with online sales. We think that the adoption in the UK of the amendments to the Waste Directive will help achieve this.”
The third edition of the EucoLight Light Recycling awards took place during the conference. This year the winners included a project focused on the collection of luminaires from LithtRec/Wecycle in The Netherlands, an awareness raising campaign regarding the UK lamp collection target while also promoting free recycling for end users from Recolight, a communication campaign celebrating ten years of Recolamp in Romania, and the foundation of the Lauterer Wettbewerb association in Germany dedicated to detecting and combatting free-riding cases presented by Lightcycle.
The EucoLight General Assembly elected a new board of Directors. Hervé Grimaud from ESR/Récylum will take the role as Chairman, Nigel Harvey of Recolight, Vice-Chairman, Stephan Riemann, from Lightcycle, Treasurer, Tomáš Rychetský from Ekolamp Czech Republic, Secretary, and Ourania Georgoutsakou of LightingEurope from Belgium, member of the Board.

Luci in Riviera opens workshop registration
(Italy) - Registration for the third edition of the Luci in Riviera officially opened on 23rd April.
In collaboration with the Municipal Administration of Dolo, the Italian educational event is aimed at providing theoretical and practical knowledge in lighting design to complete a full-scale project under the guidance of professional lighting designers.
The inspiration behind Luci in Riviera is to explore the cultural heritage of the Riviera del Brenta (the waterway that unites Padua and Venice), through a variety of light installations. With aims to boost the tourism in the Riviera area, the project openly invited local residents and tourists to join in the spectacle.
The interest generated during the lighting workshops in 2016 in Stra (VE), the first of its kind in Italy, was unexpected. With more than 3,000 attending the event to see the installations, locals were pleased with the results and impacts on tourism and in turn, the technical sponsors were eager to confirm participation for the following year. The event was widely publicised through the local press and blogs, which was rewarded with multiple partnership offers and participation requests from Italy and abroad. Another notable outcome was through the event’s participation and shortlisting in the darc awards / architectural 2017, as the only Italian entry in the ‘Event’ category. When another town on the Riviera del Brenta showed interest in hosting the lighting workshop in 2017, the decision to raise the quality of the event and open it to the world was a natural progression.
Dolo is a small town in the Venetian Province and is rich in history and beautiful architecture that harks back to the Venetian nobility, portrayed by famous painters such as Bellotto, Canaletto and Guardi. In collaboration with the Municipal Administration, the motto #luccicandoinsieme has represented the meeting point between different realities, i.e. the Parish of San Rocco and the wonderful volunteers of the local Elderly Centre, which are untied all together in encouraging a new way of doing culture and tourism promotion.
During the 2017 event, the selected workshop heads were:
- Andrea Hartranft/IALD (USA), owner of award-winning studio Hartranft Lighting Design, LLC, former President of IALD Education Trust, IALD Awards Committee and IES Progress Report Committee, Professor of lighting design (foundations and advanced courses) at Corcoran College of Art + Design. He also served as workshop head in Lights in Alingsås 2015.
- Giacomo Rossi/APIL (Italy), Professor in the Faculty of Architecture, Industrial Design of Milan’s Polytechnic and other private schools, including IED (European Institute of Design) and ISAD (Higher Institute of Architecture and Design). He is the founder of Luxemozione.com, the first Italian blog entirely dedicated to the world of lighting.
- Marco Palandella/APIL (Italy), professor of "lighting techniques” at the SUPSI University of Lugano/CH. Expert in lighting buildings of historical and artistic value that earned him international recognition, he also served as workshop head in Lights in Alingsås 2015.
- Zhang Lin (China), first Chinese lighting designer to mentor a workshop team in Italy. He is Associate Professor at the CUC (Communication University of China) in Beijing and a lecturer in Light Design specialization. He is vice-president of ACSC (Chinese Society and Art Lighting Committee in Architecture and Culture).
The first week was comprised of a six-day workshop with seventeen participants of varying technical abilities, from university students, young architects, light designers, lighting consultants and event designers, from three continents, (Italy, Russia, Iran, China and Chile). English was selected as the official workshop language, which involved students from local secondary school, Maria Lazzari, as stewards and hostesses tasked with aiding in translation necessities.
The seventeen participants were able to choose their desired workshop leader who presented their shared philosophy of light, and were then divided into groups to start the concept work, developing and sharing design ideas. During the night, tests on small mock-ups, in both public spaces and historical buildings, were performed.
Each concept and design was then presented to the each other, the public and the event organisers (who adopted the role of the ‘client’), in order to receive the client’s approval and to challenge the task of public speaking to defend their design and receive constructive feedback. The installations were then completed and installed into their designated sites; masking public lighting with coloured filters, disguising luminaires in foliage and in turn, temporarily modified the face of the town with playful materials, recreated textures of footpaths and hanging objects of reflective material, all to capture the attention of visitors and passers-by.
Each installation was realised, taking into account human perception first, following the principle that good lighting does not mean using too much light. Creativity, ideas and attention to details reveal concepts that tell a story using words as light and colour.
“Walking in the street of memory”
Workshop Head: Marco Palandella/I
Team: Floriana Imperiale, Zhihong Sun, Maurizio Mora
"We wanted to re-create the idea of passing time, in contrast to the gloomy and sad atmosphere of the nearby cemetery. We chose to recreate a walkway that connected different scenarios, representing the different phases of the day, as well as the phases of human life. Each scenario was represented by a color. Dawn symbolised childhood, morning represented adolescence, the sunset was middle age and the starry night was old age".
“Benvenuti a casa” (Welcome home)
Workshop Head: Andrea Hartranft/USA
Team: Ines Olea Sierralta, Maria Klochkova, Kaili Xu
"We wanted to create a warm and welcoming space for the proud residents of the garden houses and occasional passers-by. We used the power of light to turn the space into a living room and brought it to life at night".
“Through the Seasons”
Workshop Head: Giacomo Rossi/I
Team: Armaghan Rahimi, Francesca Dematteis, Yang He Qi
"A square that is more a passage zone than a domestic one, with four trees in the center, which people pass through without bothering them.
These trees were the main concept of our project, or the symbols of the seasons. We tried to use special lighting, even with objects for each tree, that inspired the idea of a single season.
Due to the nature of this area, passersby could have fun with their coloured shadows and fantastic colourful symbols on the ground".
“Journey into the Memory”
Workshop Head: Zhang Lin/China
Team: Wei Qiu, Xiao Sun, Davide Rostellato, Yansong Chen
"Centuries ago, famous people made a memorable trip from the hometown of Marco Polo to China. Two different cultures have been linked by this extraordinary journey. In memory of these daring and courageous people we started our special trip to Dolo. Here we created the illusion of big ships that enter Dolo and that will evoke an intense memory of the city's past in people ".
“Street Art Festival”
Team: Giulia Lucatello, Andrea Furlanetto, Patrizia Margioni, Sergio Felleti
"We wanted to fill this street with a party of lights and colours. The circus was a metaphor for the game of life that found its leading actor in the tightrope walker. The swing became a symbol of balance in a continuous passage from being a child to an adult, in a party of emotions”.
Notably, the programme of events was dedicated to educational and social issues i.e. adult disability care centres who have used the installations as backgrounds for their annual show.
Small, temporary, connecting installations were created in order to make recognisable pathways between each site. Guided tours Alla scoperta della notte took tourists and residents between the installations and notable touristic places in Dolo. An experimental laboratory exhibition It’s not illusion but perception focused on the science of human vision. The children’s most anticipated event was the BabyGuerrilla. Little guerrilleros were armed with coloured filters and small LED battery-powered flashlights and were tasked with lighting up the town, one site after another, and demonstrated how fantasy and imagination are powerful tools in towns and cities to enhance wellbeing. Navigando sotto le stele – Sailing under the stars was a night cruise that accompanied the luminous installations and allowed tourists to further understand the history and art of the Riviera del Brenta.
From September 23 to October 8, 2017, the light installations were visited by over 5,000 visitors who rediscovered a new way of perceiving the city at night. Walking through the light installations, many visitors declared that they felt safer when walking in the new designed lit environment.
The next edition of the event will be held between September 17 - 22 September 2018. The theme for the event will be Un mondo di luce – A world of light. Workshop heads to lead the new teams will be: Jan Ehjed/S Professor Emeritus and Lighting Designer, Dorit Malin/IL Lighting Designer, Natalia Markevich/RUS Lighting Designer and Helena Gentili/I Lighting Designer/APIL.
Registration for 2018 closes 30th June.
