Blackpool Illuminations to honour NHS staff

(UK) – This year’s illuminations to be presented under the theme Bring on the Light.

As the UK has recently saluted 72 years of the NHS, Blackpool has announced that its annual Blackpool Illuminations display will this year feature a special tribute to the UK’s care workers.

The autumn display, presented under the theme of Bring on the Light, will celebrate the extraordinary efforts of the NHS and other key workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

As part of the tribute section, VisitBlackpool is inviting nominations for key workers to be included in a “Corona Heroes” display within the six-mile stretch of the Illuminations. Around 50 of the successful applicants will have illuminated images of themselves displayed within a newly-created section nearby to the Blackpool Tower.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the Blackpool Illuminations will this year be extended by two months, starting on 4 September and ending on 3 January 2021 – it will be the first time that Blackpool Illuminations have shone over Christmas and New Year.

Cllr Gillian Campbell, Cabinet Member for Tourism & Culture, said: “This year’s Blackpool Illuminations give us the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the remarkable efforts of those who have worked so tirelessly and selflessly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Our theme of Bring on the Light for this year’s display is intended to celebrate the nation’s re-emergence from a period of darkness which has seen the worst public health crisis in a generation.

“The Corona Heroes section will allow us to put just some of our NHS and key workers up in lights.”

Cllr Campbell added that a further tribute within the Illuminations would be revealed in the coming months.

New lighting design practice, Filamento, launched

(Portugal) – Filamento was founded by Paula Rainha and Joana Mendo.

Based in Lisbon, Portugal, Filamento Architectural Light Design is a new lighting design practice, spawned from a partnership between Paula Rainha (formerly of Synapse) and Joana Mendo (formerly of Arup).

The company brings together a team of passionate lighting designers with an international portfolio and a history of beautiful collaborations with some of the most exciting architecture practices.

Rainha is a trained architect who, after finishing her MSc in Light & Lighting in 2005, has embraced the architectural lighting design profession. She lived in London for five years, where she had the chance to work with great lighting teams and be a part of the strong lighting community in the UK. Since moving back to Portugal 10 years, Rainha has been raising awareness of the profession in her country, along with the impact of lighting on the built environment amongst students, architects, engineers and clients. In 2014 she founded independent lighting consultancy Synapse, which merges into the newly formed Filamento. Rainha is also the Women In Lighting ambassador for Portugal.

Joana Mendo graduated as an architect from the Faculdade de Arquitetura, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, in Lisbon in 2006, and later completed an MSc in Light & Lighting at UCL in London. In 2006, she also moved to Berlin, working as an architect for weber+würschinger architekten, and as a lighting designer for Lichtvision, before joining Arup in 2012. In 2019 she moved back to Portugal and started collaborating regularly with Rainha at Synapse, co-leading the practice and managing the team and projects. This collaboration led to the formation of Filamento this year.

New teamLab Exhibition to open in Seoul

(South Korea) – teamLab: LIFE will open at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) on 18 September 2020.

Art collective teamLab’s new exhibition, teamLab: LIFE, will open at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul, South Korea, this September.

The exhibition will feature a collection of teamLab’s immersive artworks on a massive scale, making full use of the expansive, multi-cultural complex that is the DDP. The exhibition will run from 18 September 2020 until 28 March 2021.

Designed by Zaha Hadid, the DDP is a multi-cultural complex located in the Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station in Seoul. Described as a place where “design trends begin and various cultural exchanges take place”, it was featured in the New York Times’ “52 Places to go in 2015”, and since opening has established itself as a landmark in Seoul.

In the fall of 2020, teamLab will transform the DDP into an immersive, interactive space where visitors can contemplate the continuity between themselves and the world. Through teamLab: LIFE, the art collective hopes to explore the relationship between the self and the world and new perceptions through art, created using digital technology.

“Nature brings us both blessings and disaster, and with the progress of civilisation, there are benefits and negative implications: nature and civilisation are always connected,” said teamLab. “There is no absolute malicious intent or universal beauty. There is no easy way to understand this relationship and no simple way to arrange our feelings and our sensitivities towards it. Nevertheless, we want to affirm that we are alive regardless of the situation. Life is beautiful.”

New Director of Light+Building unveiled

(Germany) – Johannes Möller takes over from Maria Hasselman

Messe Frankfurt has announced that Maria Hasselman as stepped down as director of Light+Building, to be replaced by Johannes Möller.

A graduate trade fair, congress and event manager, Möller gained sales experience with Prolight+Sound for several years, before spending four years as the personal assistant to the President and CEO of Messe Frankfurt. He was subsequently appointed Director of the Brand Management and Development Team in the company’s Technology Business Unit.

Speaking of the challenges facing the lighting and building services sector, he said: “My aim is to add to the experience of the fair for all concerned, including through the use of digital channels. Accordingly, the portfolio will soon be supplemented by a variety of formats, such as podcasts, online product and trend shows, as well as internet forum discussions.

“At the same time, there can be no doubt that personal encounters are irreplaceable. This applies not only to confidence-building measures and product quality analysis, but also to networking and the exchange of ideas and information. I am looking forward to achieving this aim by continuing the close working relationship with our cooperation partners, the ZVEI and ZVEH associations.”

Möller has been working together with Maria Hasselman since the beginning of the year, which gave her the opportunity to pass on her knowledge and experience, and ensure a smooth changeover. Möller will now report to Iris Jeglitza-Moshage, Senior Vice President of Messe Frankfurt.

Hasselman will retire from Messe Frankfurt in August 2020, having worked with the company for the last 20 years. “Maria Hasselman has an unrivalled ability to immerse herself in highly complex subjects and was thus able to manage perfectly the trade-fair structures and marketing of Light + Building. Moreover, we profited from her ability to interconnect the different disciplines of this extremely varied sector and to understand the individual challenges facing them”, said Jeglitza-Moshage. “I would like to have seen this year’s anniversary edition of Light + Building as the crowning glory of Maria Hasselman’s work. Unfortunately, the coronavirus put paid to this wish. We will miss her. At the same time, we wish her all the very best for the future.”

Hasselman added: “There was nothing automatic about the way Light + Building developed. One of the keys to success was interdisciplinary thinking and planning. It was no less necessary to establish links between the trade, artisans, the industry, planners and architects than between the various disciplines in the field of building-services technology. At the same time, this success would not have been possible without the commitment of our partners and the media.”
