Zhaga launches ZhagaHub

(USA) – Platform aims to consolidate newest information on specifications.

Lighting consortium Zhaga has announced the launch of ZhagaHub, a new online platform that will consolidate all the newest information on specifications, the reason for their launch, and the latest certified products.

Launched in 2010, Zhaga is an open, global lighting consortium with a mission to standardise the interfaces of components of LED luminaires, including: LED light engines, LED modules, arrays, holders, electronic control gear (LED drivers), connectors and communication modules. This helps to streamline the LED lighting supply chain, and to simplify LED luminaire design and manufacturing. Its members include manufacturers such as iGuzzini, Zumtobel, Osram and Signify.

For manufacturers wanting to certify products, the new ZhagaHub platform explains how to get it done. It will also inform where to meet Zhaga experts, and what can be expected in the coming months.

More information can be found at www.zhagahub.org, or on Twitter or LinkedIn under the hashtags #ZhagaHub and #ZhagaBooks.

The 37th edition of the awards, presented by Cooper Lighting Solutions, saw 21 projects from eight countries honoured, spanning exteriors, interiors, universities, museums, retail and places of worship.

Of the 21 projects recognised, 12 won Awards of Merit, while seven won Awards of Excellence. The highest point scorer among all entries, in addition to receiving an Award of Excellence, received the IALD Radiance Award for Excellence in Lighting Design – the highest honour in the IALD Awards programme. Speaking of the calibre of entries, IALD Awards Co-Chair Morgan Gabler said: “Every year we see an increase in the quality of entries and this year is certainly no different. Our seven-member panel of judges evaluate each project submission for demonstration of excellence across 10 distinct areas in a rigorous and blind process.”

IALD Awards Co-Chair Mirjam Roos added: “Projects recognised go beyond distinction in architectural lighting – we honour exceptional designs that evoke emotional responses, transform spaces, inspire awe and bring real benefits to end users.”

The IALD also reserved praise for its panel of seven judges, comprised of lighting designers from across the world. This year’s panel included: Susanna Antico, Mark Loeffler, Kevin Theobald, Bob Shook, Diane McNabb-Rodriguez, Ed Seiber and Nolita Ryan

Originally due to be held during this year’s LightFair in Las Vegas, the awards were initially postponed following the cancellation of the exhibition, before moving to an online platform, marking the first time that the awards programme was open for the world to view.

Mark Major to appear in ‘Saving the Night’ webinar

(UK) – Webinar to discuss issues around public lighting in London.

As part of the London Festival of Architecture 2020, Speirs + Major Principal Mark Major will be participating in a webinar entitled ‘Saving the Night’.

The webinar will focus on issues around public lighting in London, with a particular emphasis on the river. It will ask how we might redress the problems of over-lighting, light pollution and ecological impacts created by artificial light, while improving the experience of the public realm after dark and supporting the night time economy.

The webinar, held today (18th June) at 17.00 BST, will feature an expert panel including, alongside Mark Major, Alex Lifschutz of Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, Mathew Frith of the London Wildlife Trust, and Don Slater from the London School of Economics. Chaired by design guru Stephen Bayley, the 45-minute online event will consist of a series of short presentations, followed by a Q&A.

Mark Major said of the discussion: “The issue of over-lighting along London’s river has long been a topic for discussion. On the one hand, lighting plays a fundamental role in the rich, diverse and exciting visual experience that helps to shape the city’s attraction after dark. It is also essential in supporting the night time economy and allowing over 1.6 million people to continue to use the city after dark for work.

“At the same time, we know that artificial lighting uses valuable energy and creates pollution, waste and ecological damage. We are also rapidly learning of the possible impact it may have on the wellbeing of those that live in the city, through problems of light spill.

“This webinar brings together a master planner and architect, a lighting designer, a sociologist and an ecologist, chaired by a well-known design commentator. We hope that it will prove an interesting opportunity to debate the issues around this most important topic. It should be fun as well as informative!”

Registration for the event is free of charge, and can be found here.

Nulty: The Light Lunch Series - Thinking Sideways

In part five of Nulty's Light Lunch series, Daniel Blaker and Sophie O'Rourke explore some of the many facets that influence the creative thought process.

The importance of 'influence' is fundamental to how our minds interpret the world around us. Whether positive or negative, there is no equal weighting to what informs and defines us best. However, in a world of constant personalised algorithms and targeted advertising (under the guise of convenience), it is hard to know whether we are getting our '5 a-day' in terms of exposure to new ideas and ways of thinking. Ways of thinking that ultimately make us more layered and informed both as humans and as creatives.
