LpS 2016 speakers discuss future of lighting technologies
(Austria) - To be opened by Nobel Prize Laureate Prof. Shuji Nakamura, LpS 2016 focuses on technologies and innovations across six key lighting application areas.
More than 100 speakers, 100 exhibitors and 1,500 visitors from over 50 countries are predicted to be part of the LED professional Symposium +Expo, taking place from 20-22 September in Bregenz, Austria. The European LED and OLED lighting technology conference and exhibition will be home to discussions and presentations of the latest trends in the main application areas like Human Centric Lighting, Indoor and Outdoor Lighting, Automotive Lighting, Horticultural Lighting, Art and Museum Lighting and Medical Lighting. Attendees will also find out how the latest technologies influence the future developments in these major lighting applications.
Some of the LpS 2016 speakers shared their ideas about what the future will bring as relayed to the event organisers:
Wilfried Pohl, Head of Research at Bartenbach and presenter of the paper “Light and Health – Newest Research Findings and its Applications” commented on the value of LED technologies in human centric lighting: “Since the scientific evidence is quite weak at the moment, we need a more resilient scientific basis on the non-visual effects of light. By documenting the added value of biodynamic lighting, we will change the value of light from a cheap and thus unimportant issue to a valuable part of our environment, life quality and life style.”
Ruairí O’Brien, Vice-President at the Federation of International Light Designers and presenter of the paper “High Quality Lighting Designs with SSL – Practical Examples and the New Role of Lighting Designers”, said: “Lightcentric” is my key word for the future and the future belongs to the lighting designer. In the future, entire buildings, objects and surfaces will give us the light and the darkness we require, historical buildings will light from within, ‘sources’ will all but disappear from view, stars will appear and the word ‘skyline’ will receive a new meaning and importance. This is the dawn of a new architecture, a LIGHT architecture not just human centric but LIGHTCENTRIC.”
O’Brien will also take part in the Design meets Technology Forum, organised by the Italian Lighting Design organisation APIL and will talk about “Who's afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue”: The importance of holistic thinking for designers and technologists.
Philipp Ansorg is Researcher at Audi and talks about fascinating LED and laser technology trends. “The LED technology enables control of every individual light-emitting diode in a synchronised lighting system. New luminous surfaces and flowing activations transform light from static to dynamic. The development of efficient lighting systems is an important component of the overarching trend of electro mobility. Therefore LED and laser based systems are the foundation of efficiency enhancements. Laser based lighting technology such as Digital Micromirror Devices enable ideal high definition light patterns for virtually every situation on the road. It is realised by means of a chip with hundreds of thousands of micromirrors that divide the light into tiny separately controlled pixels. The mentioned technology will be an important part for the communication of piloted driving vehicles and pedestrians. For instance, it is possible to indicate to pedestrians on the roads that they have been recognised and can cross the road safely.”
Ansorg will talk about “Safety Concept for Future Laser Based Headlamp Systems” at the Alternative Light Sources Forum organised by the Photonics Cluster.
Anja Dieleman, Scientist at Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture, summed up the major and highly effective impacts of LED technology on horticultural lighting. “LED lighting can contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint of horticultural products, due to the high efficiency with which they convert electricity in light. However, the largest impact of LED lighting for greenhouse horticulture will be in the possibilities LEDs offer to provide the light colors the plant requires, depending on the developmental stage of the plant and the time of the day. In this way, we can steer pot plants to become more compact, flowers to form long shoots and tomatoes to produce tastier fruit. Our challenge is to find the proper dynamic lighting recipes for this.”
Ferenc Szabo, Professor at the University of Pannonia commented: “In 2016, the world still has many different opinions about LEDs applied in artwork lighting. Enhanced color has become evident but the possible effects of light on materials are still being argued about. Besides the basic facts that come from physics we still need more ‘close to reality’ investigations. Thanks to the ongoing multidisciplinary research works on LED museum lighting, more and more information is gained on the effects of LED light on historical materials. These results will help us to preserve our cultural heritage.”
Technologies are evolving fast from the light source to smart controls, networks and finally to intelligent lighting. It’s a huge potential of new forces driving the future. On the other hand, we can obtain the individual and specific directions within the key applications as the statements showed above. Carlos Lee, Secretary General at EPIC and organiser of a Horticulture Lighting workshop at the LpS 2016, summed it up with a general overview on Photonics technologies: “Photonics is a thrilling technology with applications found really everywhere. Products relying on photonics technology are found in photovoltaic, lighting, communication, defense, medical diagnostics and treatments, environmental monitoring, transport, and many more. Photonics is like electronics 40 years ago, it’s a key enabling pervasive technology, and we haven’t yet exploited the full potential.”
The LpS 2016 will be opened with fascinating keynotes featuring Nobel Prize Laureate Prof. Shuji Nakamura. Another highlight will be the Scientific Award Ceremony, where the best paper will be honored, after which will be the official opening of the high-class exhibition with internationally significant companies, media partners, scientific partners and Start-Up innovators. Among the myriad of products and services there will also be a humanoid robot and an Audi R8 with laser headlights to see. Selected product launches will be presented to journalists and lighting experts at the LpS 2016 press conference. The international lighting congregation has the possibility to strengthen business contacts at three networking events: the Exhibition Opening, a Meet and Greet evening organised by Munich Re and the Get-Together Evening aboard a cruise ship on Lake Constance.

MEGAMAN prepares for halogen ban with launch of new website
(Europe) - After going live on 28 July, new website plans to help electricians and designers explain halogen ban to customers.
Fred Bass, Managing Director of Neonlite International Ltd, the brand owner of MEGAMAN, released the following statement:
“Although mention of the phrase ‘EU’ can have some of us running for cover in the present political climate, the halogen directional lamp ban will come into action across the EU from September.
“We in the lighting community might be well versed with the transition from legacy lighting to LEDs, however the wider world is still in need of reassurance that this technology has got what it takes in terms of brightness, consistency and quality. This is why we have invested time, energy and money in creating a website targeted at electricians and helping them explain the halogen ban to their customers.
“It isn’t rocket science to any of us in the lighting industry, but as an experiment try mentioning the words ‘lumen output’ to an end user and you will see the glazing of eyes and general air of confusion. So, this is why we have addressed many of the key questions asked by consumers to their electricians on the website and have also included a downloadable print out that gives a quick and easy way to understand the benefits of LEDs.
“Rather than ‘a race to the bottom’ in terms of pricing, communication about LEDs should be about getting consumers to rethink their lamp purchases from a commodity, to a lighting investment – an LED isn’t something we consume quickly, but something we invest in for the longer-term. As with everything, you get what you pay for, but trying to encourage consumers to look at features such as dimming compatibility, colour rendering etc. rather than price point is always going to be a challenge - but one we as an industry need to fight for.
“So, for an overview of the incredible benefits of the latest LEDs and how to explain upfront costs versus lifetime costs to those not in the lighting world, why not visit MEGAMAN’s halogen ban website - www.planfortheban.eu.

Fulham opens new European headquarters and design centre
(Netherlands) - New Netherlands office to serve as focal point for European research and design, sales, and administration for new lighting products.
Fulham, a leading supplier of lighting components and electronics for commercial and specialty applications, has established a new European headquarters and design centre in Alkmaar in the Netherlands. Opening of the new regional headquarters follows Fulham Group’s recent asset acquisition of Lumotech’s LED driver business, which itself is based in Alkmaar. The transaction to acquire Lumotech assets was completed on 30 June 2016.
“A European presence including a design centre for developing LED drivers for the market and the people to better serve our growing European distributor and OEM customer base reflects our strategy for Europe,” said Mark Needham, Fulham’s European Vice President for Sales. “Europe is a key market for LED luminaire design and having a team of engineers in the Netherlands allows us to more quickly respond to market trends.”
Needham added: “This is an exciting time for us to fully market our now much expanded range of top quality LED drivers and promote the Fulham lighting brand across Europe.”
In addition to the R&D team, Fulham’s new European headquarters also houses sales administration and customer service. With its global headquarters in Southern California, Fulham is a leading manufacturer and supplier of intelligent and sustainable lighting components for OEM lighting fixtures manufacturers and also for the electrical distribution market. The company is also a key supplier of electronic ballasts for fluorescent and HID systems. Fulham’s lighting components power many lighting manufacturers’ luminaires including commercial and industrial, emergency, signage, refrigeration and street lighting.
