Applelec opens London showroom

(UK) - Applelec opens first showroom in Europe to feature LG Display’s OLED light panels.

The first of its kind in Europe, Applelec’s new London showroom features a lighting display utilising almost 100 OLED lights and provides an exciting new destination for architects and designers interested in OLED technology.

Designed by LG Display, using track mounted modules and contemporary pendant lights from its OLED range, the lighting display can now be seen illuminating the showroom at London’s Business Design Centre. The unique properties of the OLED range, which includes panels with a bending radius of 30mm, provide new opportunities and creative flexibility for designers who are now invited to book visits to the showroom.

Ian Drinkwater, Applelec’s managing director, said: "We are delighted to announce the opening of our new London showroom and that Applelec will be delivering LG Display’s OLED range to the UK lighting market. We have been following developments in OLED technology over the last five years, particularly in the light panel sector, and were keen to partner with a company that is leading advancements in this field."

Sung-Soo Park, Head of LG Display OLED lighting division, said: "We are pleased to have a great opportunity to showcase our products in UK with Applelec. Just like the old phrase, 'A picture is worth a thousand words,' we encourage people to visit the showroom and feel the superior light quality of OLED light."

Seen by many experts as providing more human friendly characteristics than other light sources, the OLED panels have no glare, produce no UV and generate a low heat of <35°C, which eliminates the need for heat sinks and diffusers.

The ultra slim OLED light panels, many of which are thinner than a credit card at just 0.88mm, will be available in sizes from 53x55mm to 320x320mm. The range includes a circular panel of 109mm diameter and flexible panels at 200x50mm and 406x50mm, which feature a bending radius of 30mm. Delivering CRI levels over 90, the OLED panels are available in 3,000K with a 60lm/W efficacy and 4,000K with a 55lm/W efficacy.

Applelec have been selected to partner LG Display in the UK due to the success of its award winning LED Light Sheet product; sales of which increased by 20% in 2015. The unit has been specified by leading architects, artists and lighting designers for projects including the redevelopment of the Hammersmith Apollo, Foster + Partners first hotel venture, ME London, and, Mulberry’s Bond Street flagship by DPA Lighting Design.

(Italy) - Acquisition of NYC-based custom lighting manufacturer looks to boost Flos' North America custom and manufacturing capabilities.

Flos is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement with Mr. Craig Corona for the acquisition of his company Lukas Lighting. With this move, the talent of Craig Corona and his 30-year experience in custom lighting will give a great boost to the Flos growth in the North American contract market. The already successful introduction of Flos Architectural - the professional lighting systems of the Group - in the US will now benefit from the fantastic synergy with Lukas Lighting in order to guarantee Flos clients the best product range and design service.

NYC-based Lukas Lighting specialises in the design, development, and manufacturing of custom lighting products. Its custom division develops projects including, but not limited to, corporate interiors, retail chains, and hospitality with the possibility to tailor and engineer each project based on specific clients’ needs. In recent years, Lukas Lighting has produced installations at projects such as JP Morgan Chase, Michael Kors, Four Seasons Hotels, and many more.

With the recent and quick growth of its contract division, Flos USA sees Lukas Lighting’s market position in line with its expansion goals in the areas of distribution, service and production. This integration will facilitate quicker time to market and the ability to offer an extended range of customised solutions.

Flos, historically famous for its iconic designs and more recently also for its architectural lighting solutions, also acquired Ares, a leading manufacturer of architectural outdoor lighting, in March this year to compete effectively and successfully in the outdoor sector on global markets. Now, the addition of Lukas Lighting’s custom manufacturing represents the opportunity for Flos to better serve the US market and to offer a complete range of lighting solutions for every environment.

Flos CEO Piero Gandini said: ‘‘For a long time we have been looking at the North American market to find the right entity and the right talent to give us the chance to repeat the very successful business model that we have in Europe where the mix between decorative design, professional products and custom product capability brought tremendous results. Bonomi, Managing Principal at Investindustrial. ‘‘We are delighted that Flos is swiftly realising the growth plan developed at entry in partnership with Piero Gandini which centers on strengthening the global leadership position of the Company. These add-on transactions underline the attractive nature of Flos’ platform in further developing niche leaders and allow the Company to deliver a full range of lighting solutions to high-end business and consumer clients.’’

GE delivers Santander lighting upgrade

(UK) - UK's biggest fully-funded LED retrofit will see 50% energy savings for Santander's 800 branches and thirteen office buildings.

Demonstrating that corporations no longer have to choose between ‘profit and planet’, GE has delivered a cash-positive lighting infrastructure upgrade for the UK business of global banking institution Santander.

As the UK’s biggest ever fully-funded LED lighting retrofit, the project will see 90,000 new lights installed across the bank’s UK estate of 800 branches and 13 office buildings – slashing energy use in half and reducing carbon emissions by more than 7,000 tonnes each year.

Providing a full scope solution, GE will deliver lighting services throughout the ten-year contract, which includes optimised system design, installation, maintenance and management.

Importantly, the project is to be delivered using a cash-positive financing model, in a move that is set to reinvent the way companies think about investment in energy efficient lighting upgrades. The model includes a substantial investment of £17.5 million by the UK Green Investment Bank plc and Sustainable Development Capital Limited, making it the biggest LED-financing package the UK has ever seen.

This unconventional approach, in which the financing partners enable the lighting to be procured as a service rather than a product purchase, allows Santander to benefit from the reduced operating costs and improved energy efficiency of the LED lighting but without the capital investment and impact on the balance sheet – a flexible solution that could pave the way for many other organisations to follow suit.

Dan Vinton, CFO of GE Lighting EMEA, commented: “The lighting industry has changed dramatically in the last few years, moving away from supplying product as a simple disposable commodity, to providing high value solutions to customers while becoming a true energy efficiency partner. The old models of the lighting industry are no longer fit for purpose in this new market and this project represents a glimpse into the new world.”

“More than anything, this project has been about listening to our customer’s needs and working with them to develop a tailored package of lighting and finance solutions that perfectly meet their requirements. The strength, credibility and expertise represented by the GE brand helped make the project bankable which was a key element of success. We’re privileged to have been able to walk this learning journey together with our partners and proud of what we have accomplished here. We are now focused on scaling this offering more broadly and allowing more customers in our target markets and verticals to benefit from this type of smart value creation.”

Nick Roberts, Property Director, at Santander, said: “We launched our 20-20-15 energy efficiency strategy three years ago, in which we committed to reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 20 per cent by 2015. LED lighting has become an integral part of our Energy Efficiency Plan and plays a key role in achieving these overall sustainability goals. Through this lighting upgrade we have taken a huge step forward in executing our long-term efficiency objectives, with GE providing the support, scale and suitable products that we needed.”

Opple illuminates Moddy Mosque

(Kuwait) - China-based lighting manufacturer enhances regal air of Kuwait City mosque with 650 LED downlights.

Creating new Islamic heritage can be a daunting task when the highest standard is always required. Attempting to succeed in this challenge, the Moddy Mosque is a newly constructed building by the Ministry of Awqaf in the Al Sadiq area of Kuwait City, Kuwait.

The lighting for the Moddy Mosque needed to fit seamlessly with the interior of the 3,000 sq-metre space while enhancing the overall grandeur and regal air. This was especially challenging because of the size of the interior and the need to illuminate from a ceiling with a variable height - reaching over ten metres. To meet this challenge, Opple's distributors Alarabia Electrical's team developed a scheme and selected Opple to provide the appropriate luminaires. Opple used 650 LED HM Downlight luminaires and 1,500 metres of LED EcoMax Soft Strip. The lighting solution not only resulted in a uniformly illuminated area but succeeded in defining the space by bringing the architecture to life.

Opple was flexible in meeting the design needs of the project and provided a wide range of wattages and sizes for the LED Downlight HM luminaires. Opple’s LED HM Downlight luminaires have a 50,000-hour lifespan and offer up to 60% energy savings compared to traditional CFL systems. In addition, Opple’s LED EcoMax Soft Strip installed within the walls amplified the lighting and attractiveness of the space at eye-level while rounding out a complete and energy efficient lighting solution.
