UPDATE: Light School at Surface Design Show 2017
(UK) - Fourth Light School to visit London's Business Design Centre from 7-9 February.
Light School will be hosted within Surface Design Show 2017 at the Business Design Centre in London from 7-9 February.
For over ten years Surface Design Show has focused solely on interior and exterior surfaces, connecting innovative and exciting materials with a specifying audience of architects and designers. Light is a vital partner to surface design, changing interior and exterior surfaces dramatically - Light School attendees will discover the best of new lighting design and learn about the important partnership between surface and light.
Now in its fourth year, Light School presented by The Light Collective and supported by the Institute of Lighting Professionals consists of three parts: Light Talks, Product School and the School Newspaper.
The School Room
The School Room hosts Light Talks sponsored by Luctra; two and a half days of lessons and hands-on demos with top UK lighting designers taking on the role of lecturers. The programme of talks provides the audience with access to the UK’s leading lighting designers, many of whom are returning for the second or third year. This year’s speakers will include David Atkinson of David Atkinson Lighting Design, Sanjit Bahra of Design Plus Light, Ellie Coombs of Nulty, Rebecca Weir of Light IQ and Sally Storey of Lighting Design International. The auditorium will feature the award winning Flex by Luctra, which is a cordless and portable lamp designed to enhance wellbeing and productivity by harnessing the biological effect of light.
Product School
Product School is the home of architectural lighting and provides architects and designers with a comprehensive review of lighting innovation and technology. Visitors can touch, compare and learn about innovative lighting products from exhibitors including Spectral, Applelec, Optelma, Baro, Wila, Evans Turner, Visive, Selux and Lumiscopic. One new product introduced for Light School will be a range of illuminated surfaces from Lumiscopic featuring their trademark dichoric materials which appear to change colour depending on the viewing angle. Whilst Baro will be showcasing their recently developed LED hybrid technology; a special 3D silicone lens on the LED module which ensures that less light is directly emitted and more light reaches the target surface in a controlled manner via the reflector facets.
In 2016 British lighting company Factorylux launched a new range of Xicato powered architectural spotlights, pendants, wall lights and lighting track. During Surface Design Show Factorylux will be hosting a series of lighting workshops where attendees make, test and certify a complete luminaire to BS EN 60598. Workshops are in #TheVan a purpose built mobile workspace which has just completed a hugely successful Trans-Europe Express Tour. The van will be situated at the entrance to the Business Design Centre and the 1 hour workshops will take place during the opening times of the event.
School Newspaper
Every school has a newspaper and of course Light School is no exception. The Light School Newspaper, sponsored by Xicato, is a free newspaper sent out to 70,000 architects, designers and specifiers. Plus every attendee gets a free copy to take away at the end of the ‘school day’. The newspaper contains articles on Lighting Design, Product School and interviews from Light Talks lecturers.
Attendees have the opportunity to choose from three stages during Surface Design Show, they are the Main Stage, the CPD Hub and Light Talks. The Main Stage is home to the headline acts and will host twelve keynote presentations. The CPD Hub gives our professional audience the chance to update and gain points at the latest CPD approved seminars, before transforming into The Stone Hub on the final day to dive deep into the stone industry.

Hubbell Lighting unveils new Lighting Solutions Center
(USA) - 25,000sqft space dedicated to art and science of lighting and controls technology.
Hubbell Lighting has announced that it has cut the ribbon on its newly renovated Lighting Solutions Center (LSC).
The LSC, based in Hubbell Lighting's headquarters in Greenville, S.C. USA, serves as the centrepiece of its commitment to train, educate and develop solutions as lighting technology continues to evolve. It's a collaborative environment that draws from over 200 lighting and technology authorities including the preeminent speakers and presenters at top-tier industry events.
In addition to the LSC, Hubbell Lighting’s 3,000sqft R&D labs are also based in the Greenville facility.
‘‘The pace of innovation in the lighting industry continues to accelerate,” said Kevin Poyck, Group President at Hubbell Lighting. “The evolution of LED technology has changed the paradigm of how we go to market, making the mission of the LSC critical to our success. This new facility, in addition to our R&D labs, will keep Hubbell and its business partners in a leading position for many years to come.”
The architect, McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture, worked closely with the latest in interior materials and systems providers and in conjunction with Hubbell Lighting designers to ensure the environment is a true reflection of the latest trends in the industry, while also providing an excellent training facility. Planning and construction was completed while retaining LEED Silver status of the building itself and upholding the beautiful architectural appeal that makes it one of the region’s most iconic and recognisable landmarks.
The LSC has played an instrumental role in the selection, application and recommendations of Hubbell Lighting product solutions for its customers and industry trade partners.
‘‘The newly renovated space has been designed with flexibility in mind and includes demonstration areas dedicated to key vertical markets,’’ said Rebecca McCall, Director of the LSC. ‘‘We empower participants to tackle relevant lighting issues in a practical way. Each usable space has been designed to include a variety of lighting applications and the latest in available system solutions. The inclusion of advanced lighting controls along with the latest in LED luminaire technology allows our staff to educate visitors on such advanced topical areas as circadian rhythm while experiencing the visual impact of controllable colour change.’’
Since its founding in 2007, the LSC has hosted 10,000 agent, specifier, contractor and distributor customers, taught more than 1,000 classes and awarded approximately 80,000 hours of continuing education credit.
McCall went on to conclude: ‘‘As we develop new products, we can swap out the old in real time to showcase the flexibility of LED technology.’’

WE-EF joins Fagerhult Group
(Sweden) - Change of ownership expected to streamline organisational structure with the aim to expand WE-EF brand, product portfolio and global sales.
Exterior lighting specialist WE-EF has announced that its shareholders and joint venture partners have chosen to join the Stockholm-based Fagerhult Group.
This change towards centralised ownership is expected to pave the way for a more streamlined organisational structure – with the aim of further expanding the WE-EF brand, its professional product portfolio and its global sales. The acquisition is expected to be concluded within the first quarter of 2017, pending approval by the German Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt).
“By joining the Fagerhult Group, with its decentralised structure, we are confident to have secured the future prospects and expansion of WE-EF,” said WE-EF Managing Director Stephan Fritzsche. “While the shareholders and joint venture partners agreed to sell their interest to the Fagerhult Group, WE-EF will continue to operate autonomously, under its well-established and highly respected brand.”
Founded in Bispingen, northern Germany, in 1950, WE-EF has since developed from a small, family-owned company to a globally active manufacturer of exterior lighting equipment, with a worldwide network of partners and distributors. WE-EF is recognised globally for its professional lighting solutions for urban as well as architectural applications. In addition to the head office in Bispingen and a second facility in Neuendorf im Sande, the WE-EF Group consists of joint ventures in France, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States as well as in Thailand and Australia.
Stephan Fritzsche and Thomas Fritzsche will remain in their positions as Managing Directors of WE-EF LEUCHTEN GmbH at the head office in Bispingen, and WE-EF LIGHTING Co Ltd in Thailand, respectively. Moreover, Stephan has been appointed WE-EF Group Managing Director. Together with the global WE-EF team, the international business in the exterior and architectural market segments will continue to be enhanced and expanded. All other current Managing Directors will also remain in their positions within the Group.
“We see plenty of potential for powerful synergy with WE-EF’s ascension into the ranks of the Fagerhult Group,” noted Johann Hjertonsson, CEO of the Fagerhult Group.
For example, Fagerhult sales channels can be used in addition to the WE-EF distribution network, thereby strengthening the group’s presence in the outdoor lighting market.
With the acquisition, the Fagerhult Group’s turnover in the outdoor segment is expected to increase to more than €100million. As of the end of the financial year in June 2016, WE-EF had 484 employees and recorded consolidated group sales of approximately €57million.
WE-EF group companies included in this transaction are:
- WE-EF LEUCHTEN GmbH; Bispingen, Germany
- WE-EF LEUCHTEN GmbH & Co. KG; Bispingen, Germany
- WE-EF TRADING & DESIGN GmbH; Bispingen, Germany
- WE-EF LUMIERE S.a.r.l.; Satolas-et-Bonce, France

Towner Art Gallery presents A Certain Kind of Light exhibition
(UK) - Works from 30 artists including David Batchelor, Runa Islam, Anish Kapoor, L S Lowry, Peter Sedgley and more explore relationship between light and a range of other themes.
Towner Art Gallery has announced A Certain Kind of Light, a major new Arts Council Collection National Partners Programme exhibition exploring how artists have responded to light, its materiality, transience and effect.
Reflecting the relationship between light and a range of other themes, from brightness, colour and perception to transformation, energy and the passage of time, the exhibition brings together paintings, sculpture, video, photography, drawing and installations.
Works by almost 30 leading artists including David Batchelor, Ceal Floyer, Raphael Hefti, Shirazeh Housiary, Gary Hume, Runa Islam, Anish Kapoor, L S Lowry, Julian Opie, Katie Paterson, Peter Sedgley, Mark Titchner, Rachel Whiteread and Cerith Wyn Evans are featured, selected from the Arts Council Collection, Towner’s collection and private loans.
As the basis for vision, light has long fascinated artists as both tangible material and subject. Lowry’s delicate play with light in his empty, ephemeral Seascape (1965) addresses the consistent challenge within the evolution of landscape painting to capture the effects of natural light. This painting, controversial at the time for its apparent lack of subject matter, contrasts with other artworks from the 1960s and 1970s by Peter Lanyon and Peter Sedgley who utilised artificial light to produce dynamic colour transformations.
The importance of artificial light as a source of illumination and as primary artistic material is also highlighted in works by David Batchelor, Julian Opie, Angela Bullock and Mark Titchner, while sculptural work by Anish Kapoor and Rachel Whiteread harnesses, absorbs or reflects light to activate the surrounding space. Whiteread’s semi-translucent resin casts, which render negative space into solid form connect with Runa Islam’s Stare Out (Blink) (1998), her playful experimentation with the positive- negative image and the illusory nature of film.
Whilst artists have always been intrigued and inspired by light, more conceptual approaches in the last twenty years have adapted the energy of light into other forms to articulate singular impressions of time and space. Cerith Wyn Evans’s Diary: How to improve the world (you will only make matters worse) continued 1968 (revised) from ‘M’ writings 67-72 by John Cage (2003), uses a crystal chandelier to convey a Morse code translation of Cage’s writings; Ceal Floyer’s Light (1994), presents a solitary unconnected bulb lit up from four sides by slide projectors; Totality (2015) stages Katie Paterson’s immersive installation featuring a large rotating planet-like mirror ball that illuminates a room with tiny projected images of nearly every solar eclipse documented by humankind; and Mark Garry’s large-scale thread installation reveals rainbow-hued graphic abstractions, visible only when the visitor moves around the gallery.
A Certain Kind of Light is the first exhibition curated by Towner from the Arts Council Collection for the National Partners Programme, following the recent presentation of the touring exhibition, One Day Something Happens.
Jill Constantine, Head of the Arts Council Collection said: “A Certain Kind of Light is an exciting exhibition and will appeal to all ages. It demonstrates the ambitious and imaginative approach of the curatorial team at Towner Art Gallery. Light in contemporary art is a fascinating premise and I’m delighted to see so many works from the Arts Council Collection being used to such great effect in this show.”
Towner Art Gallery is an Arts Council Collection National Partner. The Arts Council Collection is managed by Southbank Centre, London on behalf of Arts Council England.
A wide-ranging programme of talks and events will accompany A Certain Kind of Light, featuring exhibition artists, writers and scientists who have aspired to capture, understand and define light. Full details announced soon.
A Certain Kind of Light is open from 21 January – 7 May 2017, at the Towner Art Gallery, Devonshire Park, College Road, Eastbourne BN21 4JJ.

Luxologie welcomes new associate
(UK) - Previously senior lecturer in Lighting Design at Milan Polytechnic, Chiara Bertolaja joins Luxologie founder and director Tim Fonfara on London-based residential lighting projects.
Luxologie has announced the arrival of Chiara Bertolaja from Milan, as a permanent associate at its London-based lighting design consultancy.
Bertolaja joins Tim Fonfara, founder and director of Luxologie, working initially on two large, hi-spec residential lighting projects in London NW3.
“We’re very fortunate to welcome a designer as distinguished as Chiara Bertolaja, and our company can only benefit from her expertise and experience,” said Fonfara.
Bertolaja was senior lecturer in Lighting Design at Milan Polytechnic for years – leading a course, which became so popular with international students that they had to conduct the course in the English language. Consequently, the majority of Italy’s newly qualified lighting designers are her former students.
Bertolaja’s first professional engagement as a design graduate was with the engineer Mario Bonomo, the “father” of Italian lighting design whose projects include the Vatican Museum and San Marco’s in Venice. “I learned everything from him,” Bertolaja commented.
Her first project with Bonomo was lighting the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi. “It went on from there and it was a revelation. You can imagine. I stayed for seventeen years as an associate, and during that time I worked with other designers such as Marco Pollice and Carlotta De Bevilacqua,” she explained.
Following the state of the Italian economy in recent years, Bertolaja is delighted with the opportunities she finds in London. “In Italy at the moment, design possibilities are totally limited by budgets. In England it’s the complete opposite.”
Recent Luxologie projects include the lime-washed brick and glass extension to a London townhouse, designed by Erbar Mattes Architects for a family of four. Luxologie works mostly in exclusive residential areas of London such as Belgravia, Chelsea, Hampstead, Regent’s Park, Kensington and the City.
Lumino announces new partnership with JSB Lighting
(UK) - New distribution agreement offers Lumino access to JSB Lighting’s Australia and New Zealand market coverage.
British lighting manufacturer Lumino has announced it has entered a new distribution agreement with JSB Lighting as its sole distribution partner for Australia and New Zealand.
