Lutron integrates with Amazon Alexa, Apple Home and Sonos

(USA) - Integration of Lutron’s HomeWorks QS and GRAFIK RA 2 systems with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Sonos to improve user experience.

Lutron has announced that its HomeWorks QS and GRAFIK RA 2 systems now work with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Sonos, securing its position as a provider of user experiences that exemplify the future of the connected home.

Lutron is forming alliances with brands, integrating new technologies such as voice and audio control to make it easier for customers to interact with, and control their connected homes, while enhancing peace of mind and improving the quality of life.

  • Amazon Alexa – Using an Alexa skill, customers in the UK and Germany with an Amazon Echo or Echo Dot device in their home can now enjoy hands-free, voice-activated control of lights, blinds and temperature through HomeWorks QS or GRAFIK RA 2 systems. Adding the simplicity of voice-activated scene and room control to Lutron systems is an ideal match for homeowners looking to use this new technology. Alexa-enabled devices are typically used where people spend most of their time, for instance the family room and kitchen.

Whether you’re watching TV, preparing food, helping the kids with homework, or entertaining friends, all of these events are more relaxing and comfortable in the right light, which can now be easily controlled by the sound of your voice. Getting the house ready for a dinner party? Simply tell Alexa to “Turn on Dinner Party” and experience lights, blinds and temperature set to their ideal levels.

The Amazon Alexa integration allows users to control up to 100 buttons from their Lutron system. Getting started is simple – discover the Lutron system in the Amazon Alexa app, locate the keypads you want to control, then choose up to 100 keypad buttons to work with Alexa. Buttons can include individual lights, like the kitchen, or a scene, like Goodnight, that includes both lights and shades.

  • Apple HomeKit – Starting in March, the Lutron Connect Bridge, part of the HomeWorks QS and GRAFIK RA 2 systems, will support Apple HomeKit, enabling homeowners to control their Lutron systems using the Apple Home app, Siri, or third-party HomeKit apps on their iPhone or iPad. Homeowners can control lights in specific rooms or areas. For example, just before bed, tell Siri “turn the lights off” and the Bridge will turn off lights throughout the house. Unsure if the kitchen light is still on? Ask Siri to check and if so, turn it off.

The integration with Apple HomeKit allows homeowners to control lights and shades via Siri. Using the Lutron Connect App, users can select up to 150 Lutron devices (lights and blinds) to be controlled through the Apple Home app, third-party HomeKit apps, or Siri. HomeKit apps can then build scenes that incorporate Lutron products and other third-party devices.

  • Sonos – Music lovers can now control their home’s sights and sounds in a simple and personalised way with Sonos-endorsed integration with HomeWorks QS and GRAFIK RA 2, along with a new Pico RF remote control for audio. This gives consumers direct, one-touch control of any Sonos speaker alongside lights, blinds and temperature, when used with Lutron’s smart home systems.

Play, pause, skip tracks, and adjust volume, in the same way that you control lights and blinds from your nightstand or from the wall. Imagine settling into a sofa and adjusting the lights and music from the Pico RF remote controls on your coffee table; or imagine pulling into your driveway: the entry lights automatically turn on and your Sonos system starts playing to welcome you through the front door.

In addition to the new Pico RF remote control for audio, consumers can use any Lutron keypad, or the Lutron Connect app to incorporate Sonos audio control into customised lighting scenes. Integration with Sonos is available now wherever Sonos products are sold.

“Consumers want simple, reliable technology in their homes, and easy control of their household systems,” said David Ribbons, Director of Sales, Europe and Africa at Lutron.

“Integration with Lutron HomeWorks QS and GRAFIK RA 2 systems does just that. It provides customers with the ability to say, ‘Alexa, turn on good morning,’ or ‘Siri, turn off the kitchen light,’ while still preserving the ability to control lights with the Lutron keypads or the Lutron app when voice control is not practical. From watching TV to helping the kids with homework, or enjoying a quiet dinner, life is more relaxing and comfortable in the right light and setting, which can easily be adjusted,” concluded Ribbons.

LEC Lyon turns 40

(France) - French lighting manufacturer to release art publication in March 2017, marking first 40th birthday celebration.

French lighting manufacturer LEC Lyon has announced celebration plans for its 40 year anniversary.

In 1977, LEC focussed all its energy on LED technology; a gamble which paid off when it came to meeting strict specifications for reliability, energy efficiency, maintenance and aesthetics.

It’s now been 40 years that LEC has been following LED’s development, from its infancy to its appreciation by major clients. Along the way, LEC has met its pioneers, with whom it has developed custom products which have become standard, always paying attention to norms and quality.

According to the manufacturer, for 40 years the LEC team’s greatest satisfaction has come through making its clients happy. Whether they be lighting designers, directors of public lighting or architects, LEC’s goal has been to offer the fitted LED marker or outdoor luminaire that matches every one of their requirements.

‘‘This anniversary provides us with the opportunity to thank them for the loyalty, without which LEC would never have participated in prestigious projects around the world,’’ commented LEC.

The publication of an art book in March will mark the first celebration of this birthday. It will feature testimonials from guest speakers whose audacity has helped advance LED outdoor lighting and who have entrusted their projects to LEC in the last 40 years.

All the valued interviews from LEC’s birthday book will be posted throughout the year as part of the expert series on the LEC Expert blog.

e-Luminate Cambridge 2017: what to expect

(UK) - Fifth edition of Cambridge-based light festival to explore 'Play' as 2017 theme.

Taking Play as this year’s theme, Bouygues e-Luminate Cambridge Festival plans to amaze this February in a unique winter spectacle, with six nights of light installations created by local and international artists.

Now in its fifth year, the historic city of Cambridge with its stunning architecture provides the ideal backdrop for e-Luminate Cambridge. An event at the forefront of art and technology, ephemeral light art installations play with the diversity of the urban landscape, transforming everyday buildings and spaces into something magical for a few short hours.

From Gloria Ronchi and Claudio Benghi’s On the Wings of Freedom - a kaleidoscope of glowing butterflies, encasing coloured and dynamic LEDs that come alive at night along the river bank by Magdalene College, to Alice Turner’s The Cambridge Whale - an anatomical reconstruction of the Museum of Zoology’s iconic Finback Whale specimen – all 24 outdoor installations can be found around the city and are completely free to explore.

Coinciding with the public switch-on of e-Luminate Cambridge on Friday 10 February, a night market will host a number of local arts and crafts, live entertainment, and food stalls in the city’s market square.

New for 2017’s Festival will be three special events at the Corn Exchange and Guildhalls. Tickets for each are available from www.cambridgelivetickets.co.uk, Box Office 01223 357851.

Play of Light
e-Luminate Cambridge and co-curator Pat Kane have brought together an amazing collection of writers, performers, artists, academics, gamers and scientists for this special one-off event. Tickets are available to attend all or individual sessions.

Kane is not only familiar to a few who remember him as one half of the 80's pop duo Hue and Cry, but he’s also the author of the Play Ethic, a book, website and research project where the theory of play is valued and explored. Visitors are invited to be a 'player' at this event.

Microsoft’s Helene Steiner will be reporting from the boundary between technology and nature, where inert materials shimmer with information and plants to talk to us through light. Also, visitors are invited to game on at Cambridge’s first eSports Day. Popular throughout Asia and the US, crowds can enjoy watching computer games players compete against each other on platforms old and new. Whether spectator or player, experts will show you the ropes and large audio-visual displays will help visitors enjoy the action.

The afternoon session covers biology, art, education and literature. Artist Tine Bech will show the playful way she uses light in her practice and Cambridge educationalists Pam Burnard and David Whitebread will showcase their latest findings on the essential power of play.

The evening session will include a line-up of natural born players in novels, magic and comedy. Curator Kane will host Nick Hornby, writer of Fever Pitch and About a Boy, conceptual magician Stuart Nolan and comedian Robin Ince (who will be exploring the light-bulb joke).

Festival Director Alessandra Caggiano said: ‘‘I am particularly excited about the theme of ‘Play of Light’ as it allows us to shine a light onto two very important aspects of Cambridge which we had not yet fully engaged with in previous years: gaming and sports. Be prepared to have some serious fun at e-Luminate Cambridge Festival 2017!’’

Casambi teams up with EnOcean

(Finland) - Using Casambi's solution, new EnOcean BLE switches can pair with complete network of devices rather than users needing to systematically pair with individual receiving units.

Casambi, a provider of smart wireless lighting control software technologies, has announced a collaboration with EnOcean, the global energy-harvesting wireless technology specialist.

EnOcean has newly developed a batteryless Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) switch module with Near Field Communication (NFC) that expands its range of energy-harvesting wireless solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT). The PTM 215B 2.4 GHz, BLE-based module enables manufacturers to develop reliable, self-powered switches for modern lighting control systems and smart home applications.

Casambi has integrated support for the EnOcean BLE switches within its own smart wireless lighting control platform. The new EnOcean switches can be paired to a Casambi network and work seamlessly within its framework. With the support of NFC technology, system commissioning is ultra-fast and settings are easy to configure. Within a Casambi lighting control solution, the EnOcean switches can control individual luminaires, groups of luminaires, all luminaires in a network, different programmable scenes, and even animations.

Timo Pakkala, CEO of Casambi, commented: “The combination of EnOcean's proven energy-harvesting technology and Casambi's state-of-the-art wireless lighting control solution is a perfect marriage. These two industry leading technologies create a complete wireless solution with maximum flexibility in control placement and usage.”

“Using Casambi's solution, the EnOcean switches can be instantaneously paired with a complete network of devices rather than users needing to systematically pair switches with individual receiving units. This allows EnOcean’s switches to be used as portable remote controllers across the entire Casambi network. The control logic of the switches can also be easily changed on-the-fly with an intuitive Casambi end-user app available for iOS and Android devices,” Pakkala added.

Together with Casambi, EnOcean demonstrated its wireless lighting control solutions using Bluetooth Low Energy at the Nordic Semiconductor booth during the CES show in Las Vegas in January 2017.
