Messe Frankfurt acquires Thailand Lighting Fair

(Thailand) – The team behind Light + Building has expanded its international portfolio with the acquisition of Thailand Lighting Fair.

Messe Frankfurt New Era Business Media Ltd has acquired Thailand Lighting Fair and Thailand Building Fair, expanding the worldwide portfolio of its Light + Building brand of trade fairs.

Powered by Messe Frankfurt since their inception in 2015, the two fairs will now officially form part of the Light + Building family that totals fourteen fairs around the globe. Messe Frankfurt will leverage its extensive international experience in growing trade fairs, while at the same time utilising its local organising partners' knowledge to propel the fairs forward as ASEAN’s leading trade fairs for lighting and building technology, design and solutions.

Thailand Lighting Fair and Thailand Building Fair will be held from 8-10 November at Bangkok International Convention & Exhibition Centre. The 2018 edition is expected to welcome more than 165 exhibitors utilising some 10,000sqm of exhibition space.

Stephan Buurma, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt Group, commented on the acquisition: “The Light + Building brand of shows is well-recognised around the world for its high quality event format and its power to attract the best in the industry. Adding the Thailand Lighting Fair and Thailand Building Fair to this growing family will complement our existing shows by creating a synergy between the different lighting and building markets.

“The acquisition will facilitate Messe Frankfurt to further develop our presence within the network of ASEAN countries. Our local partners ‒ The ExhibiZ and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) ‒ have been instrumental in establishing the shows and we look forward to working together with them for many years ahead.”

An experienced organiser of trade fairs in Thailand, The ExhibiZ is eager to continue working alongside its seasoned international partner, explained Pakwan Jiamjiroj, General Manager: “We are delighted to bring the Thailand Lighting Fair and the Thailand Building Fair into a new era thanks to the partnership with Messe Frankfurt.

“With their strong international reputation and some 800 years’ experience in organising trade fairs, we know that both shows have the potential to grow immensely. The lighting industry in Southeast Asia is already worth as much as $5billion, with the LED lighting industry accounting for over $1.5billion of that value. This healthy outlook demonstrates that the time to invest in Thailand and its neighbouring countries is most certainly now.”

Messe Frankfurt has already established renowned lighting and building fairs across Asia in Guangzhou, Shanghai, New Delhi and Mumbai since the turn of the century. The shared expertise that has been gained in running these shows will benefit the Thailand Lighting Fair and Thailand Building Fair and should bring these diverse markets closer together.

Klaasen Lighting Design partners with Gooee

(Asia) – Klaasen Lighting Design has entered into a partnership agreement with Gooee, recognizing the need for smart, connecting lighting systems.

Klaasen Lighting Design (KLD), which has offices in Singapore, Perth, Shanghai and Jakarta, has entered into a partnership agreement with US-based data platform provider Gooee.

KLD has built a solid international reputation in architectural lighting, and the growing need for smart, sustainable and connected lighting systems (IoT) and lighting for well-being (circadian lighting), together with new demands towards Light-as-a-Service are now motivating KLD to embrace the new lighting technologies and eco systems in their designs.

Gooee's Enterprise IoT Ecosystem is a unique ‘full-stack’ data and analytics platform incorporating hardware, software and cloud infrastructure that unlocks the smart buildings market at scale. Networked sensors and beacons communicate using Bluetooth Smart Mesh and are deployed via Lighting-as-a-Host, capturing the 'Four Dimensions of Building Activity Data' - People, Product, Place and Time. This 'Data Brain' drives application-enabling intelligence for developers, building-occupiers, property owners and managers.

Martin Klaasen, CEO and founder of KLD said: “We are excited to partner with Gooee, in a rapidly changing industry, a luminaire that is acting as a host, will have many additional functions beyond illuminating a space. This requires a whole new design-approach for specifiers and lighting designers. We value the flexibility the Gooee IoT platform offers us and our clients, it is the ultimate lighting-ecosystem allowing the designers to provide independent professional lighting solutions.”

Jan Kemeling, Chief Commercial Officer of Gooee added: “KLD is taking a leading position in creating a new lighting-design approach that considers and plans its designs around the device-integration in to Gooee’s data platform. KLD appreciates that a design project for lighting will now involve many new aspects, which need to be taken in to consideration.

“While the illumination of the space remains key,” he explained, “occupiers of the space might now also need sensors or beacons or other connected technologies, which might have an influence on the layout and location of these multi-purpose devices. Illuminating these spaces will be just one function of the device. The role of the lighting designer will therefore be redefined to include the data platform options while making sure that the integrity, quality and standard compliance of the lighting design is upheld.

“Both Gooee and KLD are acknowledging the need for the lighting designer’s role to be redefined.”

Philips Lighting recognised by CDP

(Europe) – Philips Lighting’s work in managing carbon emissions and addressing climate-related issues across its supply chain earned recognition from CDP.

Non-profit global environmental disclosure platform CDP has recognised Philips Lighting as a Supplier Engagement Leader for 2018.

Philips Lighting is actively engaging with a significant number of its suppliers to help the company to manage carbon emissions and address climate-related issues across its supply chain. The recognition comes in addition to receiving an A rating in CDP's climate program for reducing Philips Lighting's own environmental impact.

"I'm very proud to be included in CDP's Supplier Engagement leader board as this is clear recognition for our efforts to reduce the carbon footprint in our supply chain, which is an incremental part of Philips Lighting's sustainability program Brighter Lives, Better World," said Anna Spinelli, Head of Procurement at Philips Lighting.

"Together with CDP we developed a tool that enables suppliers to measure their energy use and carbon emissions. We also started to raise awareness among our suppliers by giving class room trainings in China and by providing webinar trainings in other parts of the world."

"I congratulate Philips Lighting for its industry-leading work to cut carbon emissions in the supply chain, which has earned it a place on the CDP Supplier Engagement leader board," added Dexter Galvin, Global Director of Corporates and Supply Chains at CDP.

"Environmental action has never been more vital, nor urgent, and companies have a crucial role to play in keeping up the momentum needed to meet the aims of the Paris Agreement. The leadership shown by Philips Lighting points the way for other businesses to act, and is an impressive achievement given that this is the first year the company has been independently disclosing to CDP."

CDP's leader board includes a total of 58 companies, a doubling from the 29 nominated companies in 2017. This represents only two percent of the more than 3,300 companies that submitted information to CDP to be assessed against its supplier engagement rating methodology. According to CDP, only 23 percent of the participating companies reported active engagement with their suppliers on climate change, highlighting the urgency of addressing sustainability as part of supply chain management.

LpS and TiL get ready for their co-hosted 2018 event

(Austria) - LpS 2018 will see nearly 2000 leaders in light technology come together to share and debate the latest updates for researchers, engineers and system architects in the fields of LEDs, OLEDs, drivers, controls, optics, thermal management, materials, standardisation, testing, technology trends, and luminary design.

LpS, the international symposium and exhibition, has kept up with the rapid rate of change that has taken place in the sector. LpS has been through the lighting revolution, developing its format and content at the same rate as the changes in the technologies themselves.

Over the last eight years, LpS has earned its title as the leading European lighting conference because it calls on the leading experts from academia and industry to present their latest research, developments, innovations and expectations for future technologies to its highly-qualified audience.

This year it will not only be the technologies that LpS will focus on; the multiple knock-on-effects created by this boom in development means that LpS will welcome specialists in cyber security, miniaturisation, the human centric approach, productivity, manufacturing and economics.

The Trends in Lighting (TiL) conference successfully launched last year. A combined 1800 delegates joined leading light experts from international companies including Zaha Hadid Architects, Amazon, Philips Lighting, Osram and Zumtobel Group.

This year TiL returns with a new focused ambition, it is dedicated to bridging the gap between technologies and design to reinvigorate concepts of lighting designers, architects, engineers, consultants, planners and investors so they can collectively realise the full potential and value of lighting design.

Today, TiL believes lighting designs must adopt a human centric approach. Designs for smart buildings and cities must be agile to keep up with rapidly changing user behaviors and new functionality requirements. By bringing together the most fascinating innovators, inventors and industry leaders, TiL will inspire and encourage attendees to build a future for lighting design that is relevant and secure.

The organisation behind TiL 2108 is Luger Research; the team behind the globally successful LpS series of conferences and the widely respected LED professional Review publication. With over fifteen years dedicated to technologies in lighting, this group of experts recognise the need to bring the two worlds of technology and design together to open up the dialogue and allow the experts to explore the future of lighting design together.

A panel of experts carefully selects the papers for the co-hosted 2018 event. If you want to be considered for a speaker session, submissions can be made via the TiL website until 16 February.

LG Innotek unveils new Flip Chip LED package

(South Korea) The newly developed “Advanced Flip Chip LED Package” is expected to implement stable 220 lumens per watt efficacy.

LG Innotek has developed an 'advanced flip chip LED package' that demonstrates high efficiency and high luminous flux without deteriorating performance, even after it gets through 300-degrees Celsius soldering process.

The high quality flip chip LED package improves reliability by applying state-of-the-art semiconductor technologies. As a result, it became possible to commercialise high efficacy and high luminous flux premium lighting products at both medium and high power.

Alongside this, it produces the high efficiency of 220 lumens per watt (lm/W) stably because the bonding between the chip and the substrate does not melt even at a temperature of 250-300-degrees Celsius. According to a representative from the company, lighting companies can use this flip chip LED package to produce premium bulbs, tubes and flat-panel lightings without sacrificing the light quality.

LG Innotek developed the package by improving its internal structure, designing its own production process, and enhancing the existing flip chip mounting technology. The internal structure of the chip is newly designed with its proprietary technology to maximise the efficacy and heat dissipation performance.

In addition, LG Innotek conducted a reliability test of more than 6,000 hours, where the flip chip package achieved stable performance even when applied to the high temperature thermal shock at the request of a customer. Due to strict quality verification process, it took two years to develop this product, considerably longer than the period required for the development of general LED packages.

LG Innotek applied for 65 new technology patents during the development process, and has taken thorough measures not only to secure its proprietary core technologies but also to help its customers to focus on manufacture and sales of the modules and finished products without worrying about patent disputes related to the light source.

A company official said: "This high-quality flip chip LED package is an innovative product that can advance the reliability of premium lightings to the new level.

“We expect that its application range will be greatly expanded as the product replaces the existing LED packages.”

IALD and LIRC release updated guidelines for specification integrity

(USA) – The Guidelines For Specification Integrity offer tips and references to ensure that what is designed is what is built.

The IALD and LIRC have released the 2017 Pilot Edition of the Guidelines for Specification Integrity. These guidelines are designed to help address a perennial challenge in the process of creating the built environment: how to ensure that what is designed is what is built.

While there is no substitute for the grit and determination of a designer who is defending a design, these materials comprise a set of tools for use by designers of all experience levels. The checklists, tips, and references in the pilot edition include a variety of methods and techniques to protect specifications. In addition, the materials include a section outlining the major phases of a construction project, threats to specifications that are likely to be found at each phase, and recommended steps to address these threats.

“Specification Integrity” refers to the importance of maintaining the lighting designer’s original specification throughout the process of establishing a final project budget, retaining contractors and suppliers, and completing construction. A strong specification helps ensure that the finished project realises the original intent of the design. Whether designers need to review the basics or are seeking more depth in the topic, we recommend using the references linked throughout the guidelines as need dictates.

To make the document as easy to use as possible, the guidelines are offered as an online, downloadable publication with internal links and references. Moreover, the IALD and the LIRC intend the materials to evolve and improve over time.

The pilot edition is a starting point for “crowdsourcing” improvements to the document, and the IALD are open to any additional checklists, examples, stories or suggestions from lighting design practices.

The document is available to read here.
