Rosco launches Architectural Lighting division
(USA) - Rosco responds to industry growth by creating new specialty group with Amé Strong appointed Vice President.
Rosco Laboratories, a global specialist in lighting and colour technologies for the film, television, entertainment and architecture industries, has announced its creation of an Architectural Lighting division. “Rosco has been a part of the dramatic architectural lighting community for years,” said Edward Donohue, President of Rosco North America. “The addition of this division within Rosco demonstrates our commitment to this flourishing industry, and our interest in its continued growth.”
The Architectural Lighting division’s aim is to support architectural lighting designers in the creation, coloration and control of light in themed environments, new construction, retail and interior designs and hospitality – particularly via LED lighting products, effects projectors, dichroic & OPTI-FLECS filters, and control solutions for fluorescent and LED luminaires.
Amé Strong, most recently Rosco’s North American Sales Director, has been appointed as Vice President of the Architectural Lighting division. Strong has been with Rosco since 2003, when she initially joined the team to manage dichroics, colour filters, and other permanent commercial light-shaping/control applications. She also spent several years directing architectural lighting sales efforts at Rosco before taking on the Sales Director role. Strong’s responsibilities will include developing new architectural lighting products, line extensions to existing products, and consideration of strategic acquisitions that may strengthen Rosco’s reach and market presence. “Amé’s extensive leadership experience within Rosco, her visionary thinking, and her experience working with architectural clients established her as the perfect choice to lead this new division,” said Donohue.
“I am thrilled to take on this new role at a pivotal moment of growth in Rosco’s history”, said Strong. “It’s critical that we continue to update our infrastructure to best support our architectural clients,” added Strong. “The creation of the Architectural Lighting division positions us to do exactly what our mission statement promises; lead with innovative solutions, allowing creative people to achieve their visions. I look forward to this division taking our products and service to the next level, in order to continue to best satisfy the needs of the architectural lighting community.”
The Lighting Practice welcomes Democratic National Convention to Philadelphia
(USA) - In collaboration with Starlite Productions, The Lighting Practice illuminates Philadelphia's Amtrak 30th Street Station and City Hall in patriotic red, white and blue.
The 2016 Democratic National Convention will be in Philadelphia on 25-28 July. The Lighting Practice, in collaboration with Starlite Productions, has designed animated lighting installations for two of Philadelphia’s most visited locations: Amtrak 30th Street Station and Philadelphia City Hall. The buildings will display their red, white and blue patriotic makeovers when the conventioneers start arriving.
30TH STREET STATION
The Lighting Practice with Amtrak and University City District developed a dynamic lighting installation that will capture the excitement of the DNC and create a playful interpretation of 30th Street Station’s neoclassical structure. The programmable system of colour-changing LED fixtures and automated theatrical luminaires will sweep stars and colours across the station’s east portico and glass bridges. Inside, the solemn angel statue will be enhanced with a wash of blue light.
PHILADELPHIA’S CITY HALL & AVENUE OF THE ARTS
The Lighting Practice along with Center City District developed a dynamic colour-changing lighting installation for Philadelphia’s City Hall and Avenue of the Arts. The South facade of City Hall’s tower will be lit by colour-changing LEDs and theatrical gobos. City Hall’s patriotic lighting will be synchronised with the permanent colour-changing façade lighting along five blocks of the Avenue of the Arts. South Broad Street will proudly glow in red, white, and blue.
“The Center City District is pleased to use the occasion of the Democratic National Convention to extend the South Broad Street lighting and enabled us to engage The Lighting Practice to create this special patriotic attraction for the DNC delegates and all of those who visit, work, and live in Philadelphia,” said Paul R. Levy, President and CEO of the Center City District. “City Hall is a National Historic Landmark and features more than 250 sculptures and will join the historic buildings on the Avenue of the Arts in a unique, colourful showcase in Philadelphia’s downtown.”
The Lighting Practice is coordinating the execution of both 30th Street Station and City Hall with Starlite Productions. Starlite Productions is providing the lighting equipment as well as technical support.
Filbert Street Corridor flanked by the Reading Terminal Market and the Pennsylvania Convention Center, is also featuring a light show for the DNC. The corridor’s new colour-changing LED system, designed by The Lighting Practice, will light the underpass between 11th and 12th Street in red, white, and blue. Center City’s Filbert Street Corridor will provide another patriotic focal point for conference attendees and visitors to enjoy during their time in Philadelphia.
Sylvania ToLEDo Retro achieves Which? Best Buy
(UK) - ToLEDo Retro A60 utilises Filament Chip Technology to provide end users with 300° omni-directional light distribution that is similar to incandescent.
Sylvania has been recognised by consumer champion Which? and achieved a ‘Best Buy’ rating for its ToLEDo Retro A60 dimmable 5.5W lamp. The lamp replicates the look and feel of traditional incandescent and halogen lights, whilst offering the same sparkling lit effect. It also provides end-users with energy savings and a lamp that lasts up to fifteen times longer than the traditional incandescent bulb.
Which? summed up the lamp in its verdict remarking that “this filament LED has an old-fashioned look but is bright and energy efficient.” The team at Which? tested a range of lamps from various manufacturers including two from the Sylvania ToLEDo Retro range. As well as the 5.5W version, Which? also examined the 7.5W model and commented that this lamp was the brightest bulb they had tested.
“We are thrilled to received a Best Buy accolade from Which?,” commented Anuj Vasu, Senior Product Manager for Feilo Sylvania. “This is testament to the strength of our research and development programme which has ensured we have designed an LED filament lamp that truly replicates the form and lit effect of a traditional incandescent lamp. It is great to be recognised by such a well-known and trusted industry body and it validates the hard work that has gone into creating the ToLEDo Retro lamp range.”
The ToLEDo Retro range includes 76 models with 32 dimmable and 44 non-dimmable; the largest selection available on the market. Available in GLS, Candle, Ball, ST64 and Globe shapes, the ToLEDo Retro lamps now offer a comprehensive range of colour temperatures – MagmaGlow (1,700K), Candlelight (2,200K and 2,400K) and Homelight (2,700K) – to create the perfect setting in any environment. MagmaGlow combines a warm colour temperature, enhanced by a golden glass cover and a low lumen output to recreate a dimmed-down lighting effect achieved by incandescent lamps. Candlelight creates a warm and relaxing atmosphere and converts everyday lighting into a unique experience, providing the perfect balance between illumination and a dimmed down lighting effect.
The lamps utilise innovative Filament Chip Technology (FCT) that ensures a 300° omni-directional light distribution that is similar to incandescent and provides a sparkling lit effect. FCT also guarantees a cooler burning temperature compared to standard LED lamps and excellent heat dissipation. The combination of a high performance FCT, linear LED filament construction and premium gas-fill creates a truly ground-breaking lamp with up to 116lm/W for dimmable 134lm/W for non-dimmable types.
With dimmable and non-dimmable options as standard, the ToLEDo Retro is the first of its type to achieve up to A++ Energy ratings. The entire range also delivers best-in-class lumen efficacy to help reduce CO2 emissions. Customers can benefit from a payback period of less than one year with up to 92% reductions in energy consumption, making the ToLEDo Retro ideal in both style and performance. The dimmable models have also been extensively tested to ensure they can be dimmed smoothly from 100% to 10%.

Diseño Nocturno workshop to illuminate Getsemaní neighbourhood
(Colombia) - With support from iGuzzini and Arup, Diseño Nocturno en Getsemaní workshop aims to move lighting up agenda of urban life.
Light is vital for urban life. Especially during the darkened hours, light has the power to change the way we perceive a place, to make it more attractive, safer and more social, especially where diverse human groups, different histories and other identities meet. In the Getsemaní neighbourhood in Cartagena, Colombia: a UNESCO designated world-heritage site where everyday life, cultural and touristic activities take place, identity is a crucial issue.
In light of this, enthusiasts are invited to participate in the workshop Diseño Nocturno en Getsemaní, in which Getsemaní nights will be re-imagined. As part of the project Smart Everyday Nighttime Design, an interdisciplinary and participatory research program that has been going on for more than a year, modern LED lanterns - designed in collaboration with local residents and stakeholders - will make the most of the cultural and aesthetic richness and the heritage value of the neighbourhood and its inhabitants. Here, interaction with a new kind of street light will contribute to the cohabitation of public space. The aim is to move lighting up on the agenda of urban life to attract the attention of municipalities, consultants, researchers and developers of urban projects, showing how it is possible to change the social life of cities, respecting diversities and identities.
Working with a variety of stakeholders and mobilising community participation, Diseno Nocturno en Getsemaní will explore - in one of the busiest night-time streets of the neighbourhood – an approach to studying and re-designing the urban night.
