(Germany) - VarioLED Flex AMOR, HYDRALUX and XOOTUBE 38 received Red Dot quality seal.

The international experts discussed and assessed each of the 4,928 entries from 56 countries.

The winners of LED Linear in portrait:

VarioLED Flex AMOR

VarioLED Flex AMOR is a miniaturised, opal encapsulated, IP67 protected, flexible LED design light line. It is the uniformity of light in combination with a small cross section of only 5 x 13mm that characterises the AMOR. She is horizontally bendable with a minimum radius of 3cm. It also offers easy installation, salt water and UV resistantance and the connection of individual luminaires with a virtually seamless light-to-light transition. AMOR is suitable for a variety of applications. Due to a depth of only 13mm it can be easily integrated into particleboard with a thickness of only 19mm. For applications in the areas of drywall, furniture, decorative accent lighting and exterior facade, it is ideal. Thereby no substructure is required for mounting the luminaire.

HYDRALUX

Depending on the step measurement this luminaire can be cut to the desired length on site and then be assembled by adhesive bonding. It is field attachable on site from 62.5mm to a maximum of 7.5-metres - with only one electrical supply. The elegant and filigree flexible linear luminaire in IP67 is available with up to 1,637 lm/m. It is waterproof, dustproof and UV-protected by a polyurethane encapsulation and two lights can be joined without light gap. A small cross section of 12,5 x 3,5mm allows use almost everywhere, such as in shop and retail lighting or applications in furniture and shelves.

XOOTUBE 38

It combines industrial style with elegance and aesthetics. With eleven different coloured caps, it offers maximum customisability. Through a defined pre-curvature of the luminaire, a length of almost two-metres with an absolutely straight form can be created. Absolutely homogeneous light and a beam angle of about 360° speak for themselves too. End caps, which are made from one piece to implement a wall thickness of just 1mm, emphasize the high demands of this interior light. Its reduced form factor is ideal for use at workplaces or in residential areas.

BUME wins IALD Radiance Award

(USA) - First Chinese winner of IALD's top accolade signals a watershed moment for lighting design in the region. Yongqi Lighting achieves Excellence Award.

Chinese lighting design was well represented at the IALD Awards which took place in the magnificent Gotham Hall in New York, USA. BUME Perfect Illumination Design & Engineering Company won the coveted Radiance Award for the stunning lighting design at the Han Show Theatre in Wuhan City, Hubei and Yongqi Lighting was one of three Excellence Award winners for its work at the Zhenhai Cultiral & Art Centre, Ningbo.

Fifteen award winners representing architectural lighting design projects from six countries comprise the winners of the 32nd Annual International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) International Lighting Design Awards. Of the fifteen projects recognised, one entry earned a Special Citation, ten earned Awards of Merit and four earned Awards of Excellence.

IALD International Lighting Design Awards Chair Rosemarie Allaire, IALD, shared her excitement about this year’s award-winning projects. “Every year, the IALD receives a d more than 200 submissions, drawn from all over the world. These projects were intriguing and inspiring; it was an honor to witness so many creative and innovative lighting projects from our talented industry. Each of these projects demonstrates unique and distinctive design solutions to enhance the architectural experience.”

The highest point score winner across all categories, in addition to receiving an Award of Excellence for their project, receives the IALD Radiance Award for Excellence in Lighting Design. Winners of the Radiance Award do not know in advance of their Radiance Award-winning status—only that they should be present at the evening’s award ceremony. The event also serves as a fundraising dinner for the IALD Education Trust.

Accepting the Radiance Award for Excellence in Lighting Design was the project team from BUME Perfect Illumination Design & Engineering Company, led by Qiu Wei, for The Han Show Theatre in Wuhan City, Hubei, China.

This massive cylindrical building has a plane diameter of 110 metres and a height of 63.3 metres. The external surface of the building is made up of 18,665 individual red aluminum alloy roundels. In creating a lighting plan for this complex modern structure, the lighting design team at BUME Perfect Illumination was inspired by the indirect glow of paper lanterns.

To achieve the desired effect, the team installed twenty five hundred Kelvin floodlights in the internal aluminum curtain; yellow light glows from the lantern ‘wick’, forming a gradation of light and shadow. Underneath, 3000K floodlights are adopted to balance the rhythm of the lantern ‘fringe’.

“The lighting of this civic theater is well integrated into the iconic building design and truly transforms it into a 21st century Chinese lantern, making it a centerpiece of the city,” one judge praised of the project. “The dynamic exterior lighting creates a theatre within a theater, and an illuminated billboard for the venue.”

LED lamps reflect light from the centre onto the roundels themselves, forming four gentle light spots. Each ray pixel can be controlled by a single D-M-X system; the video images created by this approach seem to move vividly and flexibly across the many-faceted surface of the lantern – or can remain static to allow the lantern to emit an understated glow.

The three Excellence Awards went to Fisher Marantz Stone for The National September 11 Memorial Museum at the World Trade Center, New York, USA; Yongqi Lighting for the Zhenhai Cultiral & Art Centre, Ningbo, China; and StudioFRACTAL for their work at Kings Cross Square, London, UK.

Ten Awards of Merit were awarded: Cline Bettridge Berstein for the Stapleton Library, New York, USA; Lighting M for the Kyobashi Child Institution in Tokyo, Japan; Auerbach Glasow French for the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, Salon Doré in San Francisco, USA; Licht Kunst Licht for the Art Museum Ahrenshoop in Germany; Buro Happold for The Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Columbia University School of Journalism, New York, USA; GIA Equation for the Knightsbridge Estate, London, UK; Available Light for the US National Library Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom, Washington DC, USA; Speirs + Major for the Queen Elizabeth Park, London, UK; Pfarré Lighting Design for Das Gerber in Stuttgart, Germany; and Arup for their work at the Northrop Auditorium Renovation in Minneapolis, USA.

A Special Citation was given to Claudia Paz Lighting Studio for her Light Garden installation in Lima, Peru.

A full review of the IALD Awards will be published in mondo*arc issue 85.

Acuity Brands introduces Bytelight services

(USA) -  Acuity Brands announces commercial availability of lighting-based indoor positioning services from newly acquired ByteLight.

Retailers keen to communicate more effectively with shoppers can now use LED lighting to do so. Lighting-based indoor positioning services take advantage of LED lighting as a vehicle for embedded technology that can assist in the delivery of digital content to shoppers at a retail location who opt into a retailer’s loyalty app.

These new services support a variety of applications that can boost customer loyalty and revenues for a retailer, while reducing operating expenses. Acuity Brands’ new ByteLight services are being piloted with several customers, including a large US retailer.

“Retailers are seeking better uses of technology to engage consumers at the point-of-purchase location, and indoor positioning services are proving to be the best approach,” said Steve Lydecker, Acuity Brands Lighting Senior Vice President of Applied Integrated Solutions. “Our ByteLight Services, together with our LED luminaires powered by our award-winning eldoLED drivers, will deliver the full LED promise of quality of light and energy-savings as well as provide retailers with the ability to connect digitally with their customers.”

Evidence-based certification in architectural lighting design available

(USA) - Applications now being accepted for first international evidence-based certification in architectural lighting design.

The certification process, governed by the Certified Lighting Design Commission, is designed to assess an individual's ability to operate as a lead architectural lighting designer in a professional and proficient manner.

"The CLD was created by practitioners for practitioners, and we believe designers will find it a valuable addition to their existing qualifications and portfolio of work," said David Becker, Chair of the Certified Lighting Designer Commission. "Designers who earn the certification will indicate their high level of professional proficiency to colleagues, clients and the general public."

The certification was developed in accordance with the best practices of the credentialing industry, under the guidance of a psychometric professional. The multi-step, multi-year effort involved an in-depth job task analysis, global surveys, and pilot studies to confirm that the certification standards and application process effectively measure proficiency in architectural lighting design.

To apply for the CLD, candidates need a minimum of three years of experience working as a lead lighting designer. They must be able to demonstrate proficiency in up to seven areas, known as domains of practice: goals and outcomes, collaboration, ingenuity, synthesis, science, stewardship and human experience.

Candidates will be assessed on written responses to application questions, along with a range of exhibits that support their responses. No tests or specific training are required, nor is membership in any lighting design association.

Applications will be evaluated by multiple reviewers who are highly experienced and respected within the architectural lighting design profession. Lighting designers who earn the CLD will be required to recertify every five years to maintain the certification.
